grow tomatoes (read all 9 entries…)
Victory Garden 15 months ago

Someone from the neighborhood stopped to talk to me the other day as I was gardening. She tasted the basil and the tomatoes. She told me that what I had was a Victory Garden, like the ones that were grown during World War 2

Another man came by today and talked to me about my garden. He started off by saying “someone knows how to have fun!”. He said that seeing people growing their own food gave him hope for the future. He talked about how all of the others in the neighborhood were just wasting their water growing ornamentals. I agree with him. He is an officer at a church down the street and said that he talks to the members of the church about growing their own food as well.

Here's a thing.

Edible plants can be ornamental too.

I’m thinking of stuff like nasturtiums, which, apparently, go great with salads. And pansy flowers are edible too, as are roses. Maybe they won’t give you as many calories per square foot of soil as your tomatoes and corn, but they’re still worth the space, I reckon.

True true!

I totally agree:) I have nasturtiums and yes they are great to eat (a little spicy though). I also have roses. Do you have nasturtiums growing in your yard? They are great to keep away certain bugs. They also attract aphids away from other plants.

For “beauty” I recently planted some chard, I think it’s called Rainbow chard.

We did have nasturtiums…

…until the caterpillars ate them down to the ground. That’s okay though, we got a few flowers and they got enough food to last a lifetime.

Oh, wow, rainbow chard is funky. I like it!

Wow, that’s a cool picture. I’ll post another one that’s a little less dramatic.

I wonder if mine will turn out well, I have never had much luck with lettuce and greens like this.

that

is a beautiful picture

I'm sure with your…

…rose-revival skills you’ll be able to work wonders with the chard.

I think

that pepper plants, hot pepper plants in particular, should be considered ornamental. I don’t know how I’m going to eat all the peppers we have growing this year, unless I pickle some.

The two hot pepper plants I have have fallen over, full of underripe fruit. We’ve had tons of rain and only a few sunny days, so it was a long wait for even the tomatoes to ripen. Not a lot of red around here.

herbs are beautiful

you can plant them in designs just like any ornamental plants.

I like sage as a border plant, rosemary and lavender for color and foliage.

Thyme grows in the rocks, and strawberries too.

Great idea

to grow the strawberries in the rocks. I have thyme in between some of my rocks now. I might add some strawberries! I think herbs are beautiful too.
