Not for supper, alas. Bollocks of the more allegorical nature.

I soaked the kidney beans for Monday’s feast, but they weren’t ready in time so we had soup on Monday and stir-fry yesterday while I kept hoping that they might be magic beans which would suddenly morph from disgusting inedible pebbles to a delicious meat-free protein source. Worst luck, they haven’t, and frankly I’d rather eat actual kidney stones that the contents of that bowl.
Now I’m thinking I’ll have to improvise and use the bag of aubergines I picked up at the green grocers the other day (six aubergines for 50p? Yum-mo!) and use those for the filling instead.
And K has been swimming today so he’ll be starving; I can’t very well serve him up a meal sans protein else he’ll be groaning and clutching his empty belly all night. I think it’s going to have to be a side portion of egg fried rice again. If only I had any eggs. Or rice.

Yes

alas, I tried boiling them, then boiling them for an extra 20, then 30 mins, then leaving them in the fridge overnight and awaiting the magical transformation, then boiling them a bit more. In fairness, it was a packet of beans which K has had on his shelf for at least a year, because it was bought by the girl who lived here before him. Which means they could be up to four years old!

In the end I baked aubergine and garlic wrapped in rice paper with yoghurt, then stir fried some cabbage and recklessly tried to put a fried egg on top of each portion. I dropped one egg on the floor and then pasted the other two to the bottom of the pan.

K, sensing danger, ushered me into the shower and scoured the pans himself.

thank god for K!

Imagine the chaos that could have been unleashed had you attempted to scour the pans.

I’ve never attempted to cook kidney beans, and having read this account of your efforts, I doubt I ever will. Your aubergine and garlic thing sounded great though – I’m in awe of someone who can rustle up something like that as a replacement meal!
