Childhood shows 11 months ago

There has been a few questions lately about films and childhood. I grew up in the Chicago area in the 70s. In the 60s – 70s there was some great local shows that we were able to watch. Like Bozo, Gigglesnort Hotel, Garfield Goose and Ray Raynard Show.

What local TV shows did you watch as a kid?

Captain Fortune's Treasure House...

...I think it was called. It was one of the first shows for children on KPIX in San Francisco back in the early 50’s.

Fuck, I’m old!

mondayrowing has the internet again. Get ready, y'all.

I’m super jealous you got to watch Garfield Goose as a kid! My dad has a best-of DVD and it was awesome even now.

Having grown up in the late 80s/early 90s, there wasn’t much in terms of local shows. In the Twin Cities, we had Newton’s Apple, which wasn’t exactly a kid’s show. I watched a lot of the original Mystery Science Theater 3000 before it got picked up on cable.

sesame street, mr. roger’s neighborhood, romper room, 3-2-1- contact, and….that one with the guy dressed in the anatomy body suit. What show was that?

I fondly remember Bozo on WGN, since we got cable in 1982.

Prior to that, having spent my childhood in the Cleveland area, the one remaining local kid show host was Barnaby, who had been on local TV since the mid-50s. I even met him in person prior to a performance of Sesame Street Live.

When we moved back to Northern Ohio from Florida (1989), Barnaby was still on the air. He retired about a year after that, and the actor who played him died about two years ago.

What I mostly remember growing up in Florida was the weekend movie host, “Dr. Paul Bearer” and the Creature Feature, and then, back in Ohio, Big Chuck and Lil’ John (mostly late-nights, but some afternoons, too), who just “retired” last year.

The Friendly Giant

...good ol’ cbc (canadian broadcasting corporation)

Maxime is an empty heart.

Local?

You really said local?

Okay then!

Vazymolo, Bulldog Bazar, Les Zigotos, Frippe et Pouille…

At least, those are the ones I remember. I wasn’t much of a TV watcher.

Some of them on good ol’ SRC (Société Radio-Canada (French version of CBC mentionned by Templetone just above))
