G2:Find a solution that will work for me and both my dogs. (read all 141 entries…)
I have made a decision to put Agatha on anxiety meds again. 11 months ago

That was an extremely hard decision. But desperate times calls for desperate measures. She has been on those meds before, while I was working on teaching her to be home alone. They made her really depressed though, my otherwise always happy and exited Agatha was all of a sudden in a bad mood almost all the time. So I reduced the doses, and she became herself again, but then the meds didn`t really have any effect. She has tried one other kind to, but they didn`t seem to have much effect on her.
But I am willing to do a lot to avoid losing my Agatha. So if the meds do help by making her more relaxed while we are working on the home alone thing, I will just have to deal with her being depressed I think. It is temporary after all. It could be up to 6 months though. But if it helps her to learn to be home alone, I will be able to keep her, which is the best thing for both of us, so I just have to let her go through that. Sigh.

in the Zoo. I really hope this works out for both of you, as she is a most excellent and wonderful dog, and I can completely understand why you need to do whatever it takes to be able to keep her. Hopefully plenty of fishpudding will help her to stay cheerful ;)

She really is a very special dog, and just have to try everything in my power to make this work. Good point, will stock up on fishpudding tomorrow!

Unfortunately....

sometimes we have to do things for our babies that we don’t really want to do. Hope this works out for the 2 of you. Agatha is so precious. Maybe you can think of it this way. Six months is better than her being on the pills and depressed for the rest of her life.

It is the lesser of two evils I think, although I hate doing this to her. But still, she simply has to learn to be home alone, and if these meds can help her learn that without being so anxious, it probably is the best thing for her. And if it works, my canine pack and I will be able to stay together, which definitely is worth it, from Agathas point of view as well as mine I think. She is extremely attached to me, and rehoming her would be awful for the both of us. So all paws crossed that we will finally get there this time!

Marisa is older.........

than Agatha. She is 11 years old so I gave up on being able to leave her home alone with all the drama. She is also extremely attached to me. People say it’s my fault. They don’t understand that she came that way. Two days after I got her from the pound, or orphanage as true dog lovers would call it, she was so attached people thought I had her since birth. She was already 5 years old.

I’m lucky that, for the most part, I can take her with me when I go somewhere.

That definitely sounds

like the best solution for your baby! Learning something like that at 11 would probably be so hard and stressful for you both.
So do you know her story from before you got her? I think it is very common that dogs from pounds get extremely attached to their new owners and often have separation anxiety. It`s no wonder at all really, they have already experienced being left by the people who had them first, or lived in a pound where people come and go, when they find a new home they love, it makes perfect sense that they want to be with their new human all the time!

No, I wish I did.....

know her story. I get the feeling something traumatic happened with men because she cannot stand them. It takes her a LONG time to warm up to a man. And she’s not afraid to let someone know she doesn’t like them.

It feels awful putting medicines in her mouth knowing that they will make her depressed. Agatha is normally such an incredibly happy dog, who loves everything all the time, as long as she is not alone ofcourse. Seeing her depressed and frustrated is not fun. But I`m doing this for all of us, I need to focus on that.

I hope it’s successful for you. It is hard when beings you love are depressed but if it helps calm the anxiety then maybe it’s all for the best.

Dog breeding

There was an interesting discussion about dog breeding on Radio 4 this morning and apparently there is a full length documentary on BBC1 tonight. The contention is that full-breed dogs are “mutants” with a high chance of suffering in pain for their entire lives.

Edited to add: I’m not suggested that either the beloved Agatha or darling Cora are mutants. That was just the word that the filmmaker used, probably to provoke a reaction.
