Get a long-term job in journalism (read all 34 entries…)
Sigh. 10 months ago

The chief editor is back from holiday now, and only gave me a contract for August. The two people I`m filling in for both work 60 % now, so there is really just an 80% job left, and it`s hard to know for how long.
I really think he is being unnecessarily mean though. I have worked there for a year now, always said yes to working whenever they need me, taken responsibility even as editor, and get great feedack on my work. And he gives me a contract 2 weeks after my previous one expired, and only for 2 more weeks. The 80% job will definitely be open for at least a month or two more (and 40% of it permanently), he could at least have given me a job through september. He really takes me for granted.
These jobs are hard to get though, which he ofcourse knows, and I do love working there.
The culture editor is fighting for me though, he said he has made it very clear that he thinks I should get a full time job there for a lot longer than just august. But this seriously arrogant guy will very likely just ignore him.
Crap.

snowleopard10 we have lift-off! hurrah!

he sounds like

a total bastard, quite honestly.

Grrrrrr!

You’ve shown incredible commitment to them and stepped into the breach on many occasions, and had fantastic feedback on your articles and editing ability. One wonders what the hell else you have to do to get a permanent job there.

At least the culture editor is on your side, that’s got to count for something. I hope something decent comes up soon, or as YG says might there be openings at other papers?

wren is TGFS.

oh no!

That’s terrible!

Silvie is thinking good thoughts for Sadie

Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

from me too.

And paws crossed of course.

Get your CV updated and out and about. Why not ask the Culture Editor to be a referee and then word might get back that you are looking for a job rather than just being taken for granted.

GRRRRRRR!!!!

Referees

I wouldn’t recommend asking for referees from within the company unless you can be sure of their absolute discretion. Having an alternative job offer is a good thing, but word getting out that you are looking would only undermine your position.

Rights

Stine, have you talked to the union about this and found out your rights? In the UK, you have the same rights as a permanent employee once you’ve worked somewhere for a year.

feddle is getting back in the swing of things

It sucks working on contract!

I did it for a few years too. And along with playing scapegoat all the time, I learned I was frequently the “bandaid” situation for the full-timers.

Although you probably don’t want to advertise it, it is a good idea to look elsewhere.

A leopard doesn’t change its spots: in my experience (for what it is worth) employers can promise the world, but their actions are what counts.

If the company hasn’t yet delivered, they aren’t likely to deliver in the future.

Somewhere, there is a place that deserves you. That’s where you should be!
