Has anyone ever tried therapy as a way to help quit drinking? Did you find it useful? I’ve been to therapy a couple of times, but I can’t say that it’s ever been super helpful. Maybe they just weren’t telling me what I wanted to hear – that it’s OK to drink. Well, it’s NOT OK to drink when you do the things I do as a result, like drinking and driving, eating bad, not exercising, not being productive at work, etc etc.

I think I may try therapy again. This time, instead of being defensive about drinking, I will be straightforward and say that I have a problem and that I need help.

Thanks Amy

Thanks Amy. That helps a lot. I set up a meeting with a new therapist tonight, so we’ll see how it goes. I think my problem in the past has been my attitude. I kinda sat back and hoped the therapist would “fix” everything for me. However, I’m going to go into this new meeting with a clear set of goals for myself and some sort of action plan to control my drinking problem.

I agree with your statement about not being able to use friends/family to help you. My friends are definitely enablers. My family doesn’t really know how bad my drinking has gotten. They are suspicious, but no one brings it up.

I also don’t want to go to AA for the same reason you said. I have been to one meeting, and I enjoyed hearing some of the success stories, but it just isn’t for me. I’m not sure if I’ll try to find any other types of group meetings. I’m just going to go this new therapist and go from there.
