dare to be tactless and insensitive (read all 4 entries…)
today's tactless insensitivity 16 months ago

was telling the new student worker that she is allowed one instance of not showing up for work and not calling and if it happens again I will let her go.

That’s right, I’m one mean hushyourmouth!

Comments:

melb100 lives in edinburgh!

hurray!

Quite staggering that you had to tell her at all, really! Who doesn’t come into work without calling?! Lousy student workers…

Good for you!

I’m with Mrs. Marple on this one… Unless she’s laid up in the hospital or abducted by aliens, she should at least call.

i don't find that

tactless or insensitive and I have strictest of standards.

maybe 100 years ago, if the telegraph office was down this was acceptable, but I do believe you were well within your rights.

I think student workers...

have to learn somewhere. How to respond to an actual job, how to be punctual and attentive. I don’t think it magically appears.

So, wren, you’re setting boundaries for your young charges. They’re going to learn gobs from that.

i agree

totally not tactless or insensitive, much deserved. seriously, what the heck is wrong with people?????

ScorpioNerve is bound for the ocean this summer! and hoping her son will be OK

well, on the other hand...

your job as new boss is to teach. no gain is to be had by anything but tactful delivery of the message (well documented, signed, dated, witnessed, and signed by employee – OF COURSE) and then the second time it happens, again – have them witness and sign the first one (already signed – yes again)- and sign something again that they again violated said law.

SO…. in this case, it may feel tactless, but if you have to do it in the course of business, do it softly and with a big documentation list…
