Well, I’ve started building it – and no, the tables-for-layout aren’t going exactly as planned (why does rowspan suddenly make the nested table ignore my /trs?! Hmm? Hmm?!)

But I’m keeping it tres simple: links down the side, title at top, and then the rest of the space for content. Thumbnail galleries, mostly :) Home -> Porfolio -> Galleries.

That’s the design bit done, anyway!

And while I’m on the subject of useful CSS links, this was one of the most useful while also being the most entertaining:

thank you

I’ve only just started dabbling with CSS, so that’ll be my new learnings!

For my own understanding – why are tables bad?

vex

From my own perspective...

They’re simply deprecated. You could make a layout using tables, and there’s nothing wrong with that (unless you’re a “better WWW” purist), but CSS is soooo much better. As a proof, I give to you CSS zen garden – it’s always the same HTML, but linked to different stylesheets. Click on different design names. See how drastically the design can change? Without any changes to the HTML! Using CSS, site-wide design changes are a breeze. And when you have a client who’s constantly changing their mind, you learn to appreciate that. ;)

There are other benefits of CSS pointed out here and here.

This is a great article on web standards that might be useful to you.

You might want to try doing it your own way first before reading this. It’s always nice to get one finished.

Hey calypte,

just to clarify, I wasn’t laughing at you! :) I thought you knew about CSS, but were deliberately choosing tables for layout for your own reasons :) Vex has given you some great links that I’m going to find really useful too – I’m very much learning myself – but CSS and the separation of content and presentation is one of those things that’s just so elegant, that just makes sense – like when I used to learn C++, how classes just made sense – that I think you’ll enjoy it :)

thanks

I wasn’t taking it as laughing at all. I’m just aware that I’m still walking along at about step ‘B’ and trying to perform tasks at level ‘M’ – thought I’d done something really really dozy! But I think building a layout with tables should be done, if just for the experience, so now I can go on to learn CSS and appreciate the true wonderousness :) Thanks!
