a residential neighborhood, a place with sidewalks on both sides, and see a guy walking up the road. Why? And this is not uncommon… I don’t understand what the purpose of sidewalks are if people don’t use them.

This
is also a big mystery to me. It doesn’t happen often here, but I do see it once in a while and it leaves me scratching my head. Even where there’s no sidewalk, if I’m out running I do my best to stay out of the street. It’s not only self defense, but common courtesy.

When I run
I use streets, even if there are sidewalks, because it’s softer on the knees to run in the street. Of course, there are some streets where it’s not safe/logical to run in the street, and also, I’m talking about running, not walking. But that’s about the best I can do for you.

Small Town
Here there are always people walking in the streets instead of on the sidewalks at least in the more residential areas. I don’t notice it downtown so much.
Having walked around those areas I know a lot of the sidewalks aren’t well maintained, so that could prompt people to avoid them.
Axx wants to swing from a star
Because
of the effort factor….. there is a huge amount of energy used to step off the pavement to cross the road and then step back up again.
Ahhh, laziness
didn’t think of that one.
And the risk of pulling a muscle…possibility.

Well you have to admit
that it is rather strenuous to lift your foot that couple of inches and regain your balance point to the new height ;)
It is
and there outta be a law against it.
I’m counting on Obama to make sure we never have to do that again!

lol
maybe they need to install a mini escalator to lift people to the correct height without the required effort.
Missa is back to work:(
Here in Detroit
people are constantly walking in the streets all winter. So many sidewalks aren’t shoveled free of snow that it’s easier to walk on the streets. Definately not safer…
makes no sense
also, I notice people step off the curb and stand in the street while waiting for the light to change to green. Do they think the light will change faster?
More likely
it will change to flashing red and blue as the emergency vehicles come to get them after being run over. Sounds dangerous!
years ago
I caught myself doing it. I was in California, waiting for a light to change and I was standing in the “gutter”. I noticed the cars stopping…a friend said out there, they actually yield for pedestrians…even dumb ones like me who were standing in the street…! I never did it again.
