work abroad
Am I crazy?

It’s been my goal for a few years now to go work for a year or so somewhere in the UK after I graduate, but it seems like the more I talk about it with family/friends, the crazier they think I am. They think that I’ll be lonely, that the culture shock will kill me, or that I just won’t find what I’m looking for (whatever that is). Even if that’s all true, I still want to do it-I need to know what it’s like to be somewhere other than here, and even if that isn’t easy, I really want to try. The closer it gets, the more determined I become. Any thoughts?

Do it!

The UK is a wonderful place to live, I found. You might be lonely, but it will only be for a while. Culture shock can’t kill (at least not within a year!). If you’re looking for something, and you don’t find it in the UK, then there’s one less place to search!

If you listen to an opinion on this, it should be from somebody who’ve tried it.

it's your dream!

You’re not crazy. If you don’t do it, will you regret it? Sure, you could travel on vacation somewhere, but a vacation doesn’t quite cut it when you want to live somewhere else.

Experience your dream! Realize that your friends will miss you and that’s what they are concerned about. Maybe they can plan to visit you. It’s not like you’re going to have major culture shock. It’s the UK!

Are you looking for independence? You will definitely feel independent when you’re starting from scratch in a new country. You might be lonely for like, a week, then you’ll start making new friends.

Maybe you can spend a semester abroad while you’re still in school? They’d set up the housing for you, most likely. And it’d look awesome on a resume (international experience) whether you decide to work in the U.S. or UK.
