swim the english channel
Is there a better swimming challenge? 15 months ago

I’m having doubts about this. You need to hire a support boat at a cost of c. £2,000 and if you want your swim to be ‘recognised’ by one of the Channel Swimming associations you can’t wear a wetsuit.

To spend so much in pursuit of this goal seems indulgent and putting recognition before common sense, viz-a-viz the wetsuit, makes me question my motivation: is this challenge for my own satisfaction or for glory?

I wonder what would be a good alternative swimming challenge?

Actually, I get overheated in wetsuits, and it’s not really a challenge if you wear one.

I have other swims on my list I want to do:

The Strait of Gibraltar
Ireland to Scotland
Catalina Island
and the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim

If it’s closer to home, it’s likely going to cost less.

Another Option to the Channel

Swimmming across lake erie (between Ohio, Pennsylvania, or NewYork and Canda) could be another option. Some parts are wider than the channel while others are only about 19km. Plus in late August the water temperature is around 72 degress f, much warmer than the channel.
