My ADHD is really annoying, and I want to get the upper hand on it, but there are a number of things that get in the way. I am not willing to go on drugs becuase I think they screw you up. I’m not willing to become a zombie and lose all my personality just so I can remember a list of words… I love my crazy self too much to do that. But it would be nice to keep things a little more clear in my head. So, I’ve heard rumors about foods that can help (like fish oil) and I want to know what they are.
Comments:
If you find one please let me know.
I’ve been on ritalin, adderall, and another med that I forget the name of.
I hated the ritalin and ended up giving it away to people. Who found other (illegal) uses for it.
The adderall helped but also hindered. I’d be very focused and productive for 2 or 3 hours; but then my hands would start shaking, I’d get hot, just not a good feeling. Like I was on speed. To calm myself down I would have a few (sometimes many) cocktails. Such a healthy cycle, right?
And the other one, I wish I could remember the name. I noticed nothing at all from it. Supposedly a non-addictive pill.
I don’t take anything now. I haven’t followed up on it. I like my crazy self too but GEEZ. I really need to focus sometimes and it would be so wonderful to find some sort of balance. Everyone just thinks I’m irresponsible. And yes, sometimes I am. But I have the best intentions, I want to do everything so I start all these projects at once and end up finishing none of them. It wrecks havoc on my self-esteem. I haven’t brought up the ADHD factor ever as an excuse for anything, but privataly I think some things it’s certainly a factor.
help is out there.
you’re on the right track with fish oil, look into amino acids… one book to check out: the mood cure by julia ross & google “adhd amino acid”
Nutrition Does Work
I am under the guidance of a nutritionist. She put me on a different diet which contains a lot of protein. I eat 6 small meals daily. I take a lot of supplements such as DHA oils, and magnesium. I eat a lot of animal protein and it works better than medication. I have tried medication and the side effects just are so bad.
You will hear a lot of guff about trying nutritional methods. I have. The best thing is not to say anything. People will tell you that they have tried nutrition and it has failed for them and then they decided to try meds. The funny thing is that for meds it is all about trial and error to find the right one. So why can’t it be trial and error for nutrition as well? The truth is they were not on the right diet. The hypoallergenic diet is the correct one for me, but like medicine it needs to be adjusted from time to time.

I won't reccomend ritalin or anything like that
But “I’m not willing to become a zombie and lose all my personality”
makes me wonder. I’m on Concerta and certainly still have my personality and are in not a zombie in anyway. But I respect that you aren’t interested in medicine. I just wanted to add that medicine doesn’t necessarily do that to people. I also heard about fish oil so that might be worth a shot, some people swear by keeping a diet you can read about here
Good luck.
