Exactly what can I expect at Burning Man?
"Burning Man...
is more decadent than Warhol’s Factory, more glamorous than Berlin in the 1920s, more ludicrous than the most lavish Busby Berkeley musical, more of a love-fest than Pepperland, more anarchic than Groucho Marx’s Freedonia, more implausible than any mirage.” ~Daniel Pinchbeck

Burning Man is an exercise in freedom. Not freedom from the laws of the land, because these are still enforced (although not to the degree you encounter in Anytown, USA.) Burning Man is about social freedom. Burning Man is where you are welcome to…encouraged to…re-invent yourself, free from negative judgments by others and from your own anxieties about who you are or want to be. Your quirks are cheered, encouraged. You can take on a fresh identity and adopt a name of your choosing…just like you can here on 43T! Whatever crazy idea you have, get a bunch of friends together and do it and it becomes your new reality. It’s consensual reality. It exists because you get someone else to agree with you that it exists.

Burning Man is a place where your dreams can come true. But more importantly, Burning Man teaches that once you learn how to make your dreams come true there, you can make them come true anywhere.
The original Burners arrived at the Playa, and drew a line on the ground, and they stepped over it. It symbolized a change. It represented that having crossed the line, they were in a different place. In a different reality. They called it The Zone.

What can you expect at Burning Man, Mollie? Expect that whatever you bring to Burning Man will be radically different when you leave with it, after one week in The Zone.

Right now I can think of nothing I could possibly add, except Converge. Create. Cremate. Perfectly summarized, and visualized, hawk.
Consensual reality. Dream creation. Empowerment. The Zone. Radical self-expression, radical survival.
I feel like so much in my growth has led up to this.
I am so there.
Who’s with me?
what say you, Mol …

Sounds like
an epic adventure – not for the feeble or weak at heart.
I am so in!!
disclaimer: I am so in IF I can talk my family into letting me go, unescorted, to the desert of Las Vegas for a week and if I don’t have an abundance of work to do at the place that gives me a paycheck, and if I can be assured of not catching an STD (pretty likely that I won’t, unless I sit on a particularly disgusting toilet seat…. speaking of, who is bringing the penicillin?
Let's take these one at a time
1. Family: I suggest bribes. If those are resisted, escalate to blackmail. You have almost a year to get something on each and every one of them.
2. Work: Just look ‘em in the eye and tell ‘em you’re going to be away for a week, while thinking “and if you don’t like it, too bad.” Attitude, which you have in spades, will win the day. Or week. Remember, they cannot get along without you. They know it, you know it.
3. Porta-San STDs: There are two lines of defense. For you squeamish types, I suggest using them both. First, spray every seat with Lysol. That’s the kill-the-bug defense. Next, consider a personal barrier of liquid latex Not only effective as bug-armor, but can do double duty as your official Burning Man costume.
4. Penicillin: Before you leave home, put 2 Tbs. of water in a plastic bag with half a loaf of bread. Put this in a dark corner of your luggage. By the time you need the penicillin, it’ll be there.
Problems solved.
:)
FYI: This is not your father’s Las Vegas Desert. It is the Black Rock Desert. No casinos, no swimming pools, no golf courses, no palms, no cactuses (cacti is not a real word, cactus being Greek in origin, nor Latin), no scorpions, no snakes.
SG is thinking of a great general who subdued the eastern barbarians
liquid latex?
lolol…I want some of that! It would be so much more fun than Silly String!

No Swimming Pools?
The desert sounds hot. If there are no swimming pools, I might break a sweat or something (not a pretty sight, let me assure you).
Seriously, it sounds like an epic adventure. As for the family thing – I am pretty sure I have one lurking, probably at this thread, so there will no keeping secrets from them..

I can be of some assistance
in the family department. After all, my family is letting Me go (and not without some manuevering, I might add).
Work is work. It will be there when you leave and when you return, regardless. If everything else falls into place, work will as well. I agree with hawk 100%. Attitude is everything. In fact, talk it up. Start now.
As for the aversion to STDs, stick with me, darlin. (Yours is an aversion I share.) Plus, among other things in my work life, I am a health risk prevention specialist. Besides, I made a deal with my family. Leave alone, return alone. Nuf said.
There, you’re coming, right? :)
oh, and re: the LL, I will if you will…
o please o please o please o please
Uncle Enore ACK!
I don't know about all this...
...philosophical and metaphysical crap, Hawk.
It’s a fuckin’ week long party.
It is
what you make of it, my friend.
And there’s nothing wrong with making it a week-long party.

Uncle Enore ACK!
Sometimes...not too often...
...I’m caught without any snappy rejoinder to toss back cleverly.
This is one of those times.

So that means
you’re in, of course.
Right?
Uncle Enore ACK!
If there is any way that I can possibly manage it...
...yes.
There’s a lot that needs to fall into place. If it do, you bet.
