turn off the computer (read all 6 entries…)
scary realization 14 months ago

It happened right here, this morning. I realized I was done peeking at all my regular internet stops, and the thought of standing up and getting on with my morning was just too unpleasant to bear, so I tried desperately to come up with more sites to look at, to quell how unhappy I was about confronting my “real-life” options.

In a way, I think I do that on a slightly subconscious level all the time. The internet has become a drug, though one that has very few side effects… or does it?

Kthxbye.

Rather like the morning I had last year, noted here: http://www.43things.com/entries/view/1991181.

yes

I remember that. It is much like my current situation. :-/

But you got out of it and moved on! Yay Petersky!

HavanaCat is traveling though time and will return last week

crikey...that's me too!!

Hey Emily…I check my emails at home when I have my morning coffee, check the weather, check 43 things and write something or cheer a few 43 folks, then fart around looking up art websites, and then, and then…I actually on occasion click on MSN celebrity links to discover why Angelina Jolie is depressed or if Jen Aniston is really looking to get back with John Mayer. I kid you not. :( I don’t care about that crap. But I care even less about going into work these days. I’ve been handed an impossible task there, and I’m just burned out and fed up and wishing I could stay home in my PJs. What are we to do???? Us and a gazillion others who do this every morning as a way to procrastinate and not go to work. We should start a team…but then we’d be checking each other’s progress and comments, and we’d be online even more! Ha Haaaaa HAAAAAA HAHAHAHA…laughs moronically. I’m so with you…if that helps any.

definitely helps!

Perhaps the solution, though, is to have some AA equivalent for internet addiction, but sadly I think it would have to be in person and local and not on the internet :-/ and what fun would that be? heh heh.

And you know, for me, it’s not just in the morning… I do it at work, too. D’oh! It’s getting to where I have to find alternative places to sit, where my hand doesn’t keep creeping over to the mouse. Sigh.

For me

my secret indulgence is:

fivethirtyeight.com or electoral-vote.com

fivethirtyeight...

love that one…

And look! Virginia and North Carolina are blue! Woohoo!

yup

I’m back to circling all the usual websites in order to avoid life… which today offers me the chance to clean up and look cute, walk in the sunny, gorgeous outdoors, and go to work and get a lot of stuff done so that we have a beautiful website to present at the end of the week!

Must find another way to wake up that doesn’t involve 45 min of mindless web-gazing.

RP is swimming through paper.

is the problem really too much time on the computer

or what you are trying to avoid? The people who commented here who seemed to identify with you (not that I don’t occasionally) seemed to be facing big hurdles at work.

it started out that way

but now it’s just become an ingrained behavior, and I go through it even at home, when there are so many other things I want to and could be doing, but perhaps there’s some fear of failure there too (less so when I’m out of my usual environment, with friends, whatever). And now my job is getting better (gradually, though it’s still not quite what I want to be doing with my life) and I’m still struggling with it.

Doesn’t help that I’m always waiting breathlessly for that next email from Mr London!

On that note, though, I’m thinking I won’t bring my laptop to England – and even the iPhone email access will be limited to where there’s wifi – and Mr. L will be with me most of the time, so it’ll be interesting to see whether those circumstances can help me break the habit.

Cloudberry has gotten 5 cheers on this entry.
