Overcome my fear of escalators (read all 4 entries…)
overcome my fear of escalators - part 4 14 months ago

I was in a stupid situation today. I had to go to a shop that was on the first floor (or second floor for those who count the ground floor as the first one …), meaning I used the elevator (lift) to get there because the moving stairs scared me so much … So far so good. BUT it all changed when I wanted to go downstairs again …

I saw that the part where the button is that you have to press was covered with something that someone had to open using keys, so that you could press the button. I then stood infront of a decision : Either I had to call someone to open that thing with a key, or I had to go downstairs using the moving stairs … Which was a horrible thing for me even in my own mind …

However, guess what I did :D. I used the moving stairs. Luckily, I wasn’t forced to get on the escalator quickly. There was nobody standing behind me. At first it was horrible, but when it went down it became more and more okay for me. At first I really was about to cry, but then I was rather relaxed.

I really should work more on my goal to do so. This is the first time after two years that I got on an escalator going down, I think … I want to be able to give tips to you guys on how to do it without panicking.

But we will be able to reach this goal … I am really sure about this!!

I can relate

A couple of times I’ve been “trapped” by my fear of escalators. It is a terrible feeling facing the down escalator.

Strange thing is—my grandmother also had a fear of escalators. As a child I would go with her to the department store. We always had to atke the elevator even though it was really inconvenient and slow. I used to think she was a little nutty. Well low and behold. I’m the same now!

My fear has developed over the past couple of years. When I lived in Japan I took escalators about ten times a day and was never bothered but now I’m terrified of them. I’m okay if someone gets on the escalator right before me. Other wise I fell like I’m going to tumble forward.

So strange that this fear has just popped up like a recessive gene or something.

Aww, that sucks indeed! Maybe your grandmother was a little older when she went on the first escalator I guess. It can be rather hard to find out the right moment to get on them, for example. At least I am much more aware of the chance of getting on them the wrong moment …

If you stand in a certain way (with straight back and so on), I guess the chance of tumbling forward is very low :). I would maybe try this. Is your fear related to a phobia of heights in general? Because then, I would additionally look forward instead of down.

You lived in Japan :D?? (I want to go there, too. Don’t know whether I want to really live there, but I really love Japan a lot :] ...)

khaosinkinema has gotten 3 cheers on this entry.
