learn to sail (read all 2 entries…)
design...

methinks the best way t’go would be a sort-a catamaran-ish, simple pontoon structure… w/ a lateen sail. yep… even the professional versions of such a vessel don’t look terribly difficult to build from scratch… i know, i know – i’ve gotta watch the weight & balance… but i figure it’s not going to be terrible to try

the other option is perhaps a(n inherently buoyant)[1] raft. but where am i going to find balsa logs &ct.? or other inherently buoyant materials?... i need to find a junkyard also, and soon.

[1] {pardon my french, but…} the description “inherently buoyant” was epoche’d because a raft is by definition inherently buoyant- so to avoid redundancy. however the description was included in case the distinction between raft & boat (which i only learned yesterday) went o’er y’r head as it did o’er mine (prior to my enlightenment yesterday)...

anyway- ahoy!

Buoyancy

The classical buoyancy element for a low-budget watercraft is the empty 50 gallon drum. Bunch them together for a raft, string them out in two rows for a catamaran.

thanks

hahaha, yeah that’s what i was thinking—but where on earth do i get a 50 gal. drum? (and moreover – how much will it cost?!)

Recycle.

The place to start is your local rubbish dump. You might not find any there, but if you start asking there you can get leads to possible supplies.

I’ve been thinking: A really cheap and simple option would be bags stuffed with empty plastic soft-drink bottles.
