clean for 30 minutes for 30 days (read all 11 entries…)
I guess I started again. 13 months ago

...unwittingly… Yesterday I put together a box full of old clothes to go to DI. This morning I went through all my shirts and organized them a bit better (work shirts, t-shirts, running shirts). Took at least a half hour each time.

I guess there’s never going to be a “perfect” 30 days, so I might as well just start now, or two days ago (11/12).

Comments:

I love this goal...

but it scared me until you commented there’s never going to be a perfect 30 days. Maybe I can do “10 minutes for 10 days”?

Work up to it!

I once read that it takes 30 days to form a habit, so this made a lot of sense to me. Seemed like a good way to get in the habit of keeping things tidy—so they don’t get so out of hand that the job just seems too big to tackle.

Unfortunately, I’ve fallen out of the groove on this one. I find that if my routine gets disrupted, like with a vacation, or the holidays, I quickly forget about this one. Maybe it’ll be easier after the new year. I’m still going to keep plugging away at it, even if it is only two or three days a week (if that much) for now.

Anyway, good luck if you decide to add this one to your list!

A tip that I think might help is to focus on decluttering first. Once things are decluttered it is easier to clean. Maybe 15 mins declutter, then 15 mins cleaning that spot?

Good Luck!

Definitely!

A few weekends ago, when I was avoiding doing something REALLY important ( :D ) I cleared off my kitchen table. I had plants, papers, stereo equipment, a toolbox, and even a small bookshelf sitting on it. Now it’s clear—except for yesterday’s mail (which I still have to sort through). It’s so much easier to keep it clean so long as I stay on top of it, and it was pretty intimidating with all that stuff on it. Now, instead of fretting about when I’ll make time to clean the kitchen table, it takes minutes to do it. Feels good to have accomplished it!

Unfortunately, the tray under one of the plants I had sitting on it had a crack in it, and it leaked on the table top, ruining the finish in several spots. So I guess as soon as there’s room on my list here, I’ll have to add “refinish my kitchen table top”. :D

5 min declutter

Flylady calls these 5 min hotspot fire drills. You know how you put one thing there, then another, then another and soon you have a raging fire lol Set a timer for 5 mins and clear until the buzzer goes off. Have a rubbish bin/recycling bin beside you and toss as you go. Only handle each item ONCE! THEN (this is the big part for me) put the rubbish and recycling bins away and then don’t feel guilty with how much you did or didn’t do. Just be happy that some is done! Do this at the top of every hour for the best results :D

Mike has gotten 4 cheers on this entry.
