Get a long-term job in journalism (read all 35 entries…)
Zonino! 12 months ago

It seems I will be offered a job until summer! Yay! It’s in the weekend section, which is more stressful than culture, but still, very supexited about it! Especially since I was worried the weekend editor didn’t really think I was doing a good job. She sent me a message saying we’ll talk about it tomorrow, so I don’t know exatly what she means by summer, it could be anything from may to august. I have been seriously worried about my job situation because of the financial crisis, which is causing a serious crisis all across norwegian media. Now at least I can relax for a few months. Yay!
Plus, this is actually hiccup guys job. He will unfortunately still be sitting very close to me in the office, but instead of working as a journalist he will be a full time photographer until summer. And I overheard him on the phone with the photographers union, he said he wanted to join them because he will now be working as a photographer at least until summer. Instead of constantly grolwing in his direction, I will now start telling everyone what an amazing photographer he is, hoping that the boss will overhear it and be inspired to hire him as a photographer for a longer period instead of giving him his old job back. ;)

Thank you

very much! I’m quite supexited about it!
And although the weekend section is rather stressful, it is also a lot of fun. Today for instance, I have spent an entire day doing very important research on escalators. I discovered, among other things, that the story of a norwegian village celebrating their first escalator made international news, as a news agency picked it up. I assumed that story was from 1950, but it was in fact from 2006. I also discovered that the new, cool thing are pink or turquoise escalators, and that there are entire organisations devotet to people not falling down excalators.
Very important journalistic research indeed. ;)

wren is mightier than grief.

that is very interesting...

I think it would be a good thing for everyone to celebrate their escalators! And I would like to see a pink or turquoise escalator, although I imagine they will look very dated 20 years from now.

A story about escalators ...

My daughter (Helmi/Pearl by nickname) was lucky enough to take a group of youngsters who had been street children (orphans or abandoned youngsters living on the streets) to the UK to participate in a theatre exchange. They ‘twinned’ with a group from another country and workshopped a play about their life circumstances. Their home town is Makana, the township just outside the small university town of Grahamstown. (All relevant information.)

Helmi was astounded to discover, when the group reached the nearby small city (Port Elizabeth) where the airport is located, that a couple of members of the group had NEVER EVER SEEN OR HEARD OF AN ESCALTOR! They were bemused, scared, tentative and embarrassed. Imagine what they thought of London and the tube! She had to coach them before they felt happy to ascend or descend!

PE is only about 120km from Grahamstown, but these youngsters were so impoverished that they had never ever been there. And Grahamstown itself, although it is a university town, has no buildings taller than about 3 stories, and there are no escalators in the town at all.

Sometimes we forget what we take for granted.

phensy Not so grand, times running short.

I remember

the first time I went on the tube, and the escalators were definately the scariest thing. I was convinced as a kid that I would be pulled in when it got to the top.

My mother

annoyed a gentleman when she accidentally trod on the back of his shoe, as they reached the top of one of the very long escalators on the underground. The shoe flew off and tumbled all the way down. He made her go down to fetch it.

Thank you

very much! Quite supexited about it. ;)

Just made a breakfast martini

and then got the news, am I psychic or what? A glass is being raised to you at Leopard Towers. Me hearty congratulations Stine, what an excellent thing to happen at last! Curlychaos SoapDragon strikes again!

The escalator research sounds fascinating! Turquoise escalators are going straight into the nano novel this evening, to counter-balance the many lift references ;)

Thank you very much!

I’m all out of gin, which is very annoying, so you’ll simply have to have an extra BM for me! ;)
I’m quite supexited about it. And also about being able to give you the idea of turquoise escalators for the novel. It can come with pink lights on it, if that helps. ;)

right ho....

another breakfast martini, if you insist!

am shocked you’re out of gin, what the H E double hockey sticks is going on? Morten stealing all the gin is supposed to be fiction!

It is totally supexiting. Am totally supexited for you! Can’t imagine how supexited you must be yourself! And you haven’t even had a BM to raise the supexitment levels!

More info on the turquoise escalators would be v. useful. Pink lights are great. Are there any other pastel colours involved? Maybe someone could shove someone else down the turquoise escalator – what would the safety people have to say about that, I wonder?

Psychic???

Not you as well as Madam Ish.

so what numbers should I choose for the lottery this week?

hehe

what I failed to mention was my nightly breakfast martini habit, so it had nothing to do with CC’s excellent news! ;)

Zonino!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you!

Not to thrilled about still being near hiccup guy, but the other part is great! ;) Hiccup guy has been on fire lately, because we are moving offices this weekend. Which means everyone had to go through all their stuff and throw away most of it, since we will have less storage space. Which means, hiccup guy had endless possibilities to tell endless anectodes, because there is ofcourse at least one anectode for every piece of paper in his drawer, and he had a million pieces of paper. Whenever I looked around, there was hiccupguy, waving a piece of paper hoping to attract someones attention so he could start the anectode telling. ;)

Hehe, I read this comment in the e-mail in my inbox, which means the lines through words don’t show, so thought you were having breakfast martini porridge. I thought that sounded like a very interesting invention! ;)

Friede is snuggling with the dog

yay!

CONGRATULATIONS. And well deserved. You have certainly been putting in your sweat equity at this paper.
