Order the 43Things book (and tell the world while I'm at it)
What a great idea... 13 months ago

I wonder what juicy little tidbits are in it?...Have the names been changed to protect the innocent?...

I don't know.

I feel sort of betrayed. I didn’t join 43things so someone could take my experiences or those of other members and make a profit out of publishing the information. Did anyone from 43T ask anyone if they wanted their information included?

I mean, maybe I’m jumping to conclusions and nobody’s specific info or posts will be there. And maybe there is some fine print I didn’t read somewhere that says they have the right to take info from the site and publish it. But it almost makes me want to leave. Seriously. I don’t like the idea that someone else could just decide to appropriate my posts or writings and use them, uninvited, for their own profit.

I guess we’ll see what this is about. Sorry if I’m pooping on anyone else’s birthday cake, I seem to be the only one who isn’t excited about the idea…

I think your concerns are valid Nic.

Gee...

I would be honored if somebody pilfered my postings…
But, then again, who in their right mind would?

Are you talking about that new 43T book?

Yes.

I guess it’s just a different way of looking at it. I think part of it has to do with personal past history on my part, and part of it has to do with…hmmm, the only way I can put it is that it would really change the feeling of the 43T environment here for me if I thought everything that everybody posted here was up for grabs. I mean, I know it’s a public forum, but it still feels relatively safe and like we are having personal conversations. Having my postings pilfered and published would feel akin to having some uninvited outsider that I have no connection with listening in on my conversations and publishing them for a larger audience. Again, I know this is a public place where anyone can read what you write, but the way it seems as if this was done (I have no idea, since I haven’t seen the book) smacks of voyeurism. I just don’t feel I could be as candid and “safe” in that environment. I mean, basically people who take the time to read what you have to say are either interacting with you, or they’re not interested and leaving your threads alone.

Having some anonymous outsider monitor and record your thoughts with the purpose of doing a study or how to book or whatever feels creepy and intrusive.

I guess the Internet is the proverbial

double edged sword.
We THINK that what we write here never gets in the wrong hands, or that only friendly eyes are gazing, when this is not entirely the case.
I had made a goal of getting #1 listings on Google for certain keywords in my business.
Imagine my shock at discovering that I did get to #1,BUT the listing that showed up at #2 was my actual posting of the goal on 43T.
The rest of the world googling stuff changes everything.
We’re all more transparent than we realize.

It's the wonderful world-wide web

I’ve probably done very much the same thing to myself…

No, Nic.

I agree with you.

Furthermore,

the author is a member at 43T, and not a very active one it appears, either. I don’t see any interactions with other users in terms of cheers given, received, and comments made. And further than that more, of the very, very few cheers she has received, they are almost all from robots, and three of the robots have purchasing the book on their list of to dos (in fact, they are the only three on this variation of the goal). Are the robots the co-authors listed on the cover as the “Editors of 43things?”

Excuse my negativity. For some reason this has just left me feeling very down about this place. But I guess there’s no point in getting all grumpy before I even know what the book contains. It’s just me being Chicken Little again. I’ll have to wait two or three more weeks before I know whether the sky really is falling. LOL!

Hawk and I

found out that we stomp around the same grounds sometimes. So we decided the next time I was in his vicinity, we’d get together. It was cool! He’s now my second 43Ter that I’ve met in the “real world.” The first was bedhead2, who is also fantastic.

I’m not excited about it. I don’t like it either.

maybe but probably not

But then again I don’t think a book like that would sell too well as for the most part nobody would know who was being talked about. I think the title “Dream It. List It. Do It!” is more a book about the concept behind 43 Things that has made it a success given its loyal following of those who have found it very helpful. If I was a gambling man I would bet that it would be more along the lines of an expanded version of these articles about 43T that are up in the section of the site that seeks to explain 43T. Or at least as the main point but I also won’t rule out the possibility of a few really good success stories of users who were able to really turn their live around with the help of 43T. But even then any such success stories would be much better if they were written by the person or based upon an interview with the person knowing the purpose and not some random bits of their posts.
