Go outside & play. (read all 12 entries…)
I have to start hiking again. 13 months ago

I’ve been hiding indoors most of the time ever since A’s car window got smashed while parked at the trailhead that’s near our house. Over and over I’ve allowed these sorts of events to make me disproportionately fearful=housebound. I have a right to be here too! :P :D Looks almost funny when I write down the feeling in words. maybe my recent misery is all due to a lack of sunlight and exercise. No one is going to swoop down and save me! I can’t wait to feel like it or I am going to do myself more harm than anyone else ever has.

Eh, if you’re reading this…thank you for listening. :)

no, it was for you and sea at the time,

why do you ask?

thanks for the cheers but you’re still on my shortlist of A LITTLE TOO RANDOM FOR ME

smartstuff is engaged

Interesting...

I would have thought I would have ended quite high on that list…

Kalibebti Happy New Year everyone ! : )

no, well, it was just that incident yesterday

(or was it the day before?) with them crashing my sedate little kohl question…but why you smartstuff? I don’t find you random at all! At least, not in your interactions with me!

smartstuff is engaged

Ah

Now, granted, I did nothing more than skim through those comments at the time, but I would not have suspected they made you feel not-so-nice. :( It seems like it was intended all in good fun, so it sucks that you ended up with hurt feelings out of the deal… ((hugs)).

And me? Not random, you say? Clearly I’m thinking that you don’t know me very well. :) I adore such nonsensical fun. (A side effect of going to a high school with a large contingency of neo-dadaists.)

What is it that you want me to understand

o Devilish one?

why do you care you berserker you?

Kalibebti Happy New Year everyone ! : )

Thanks for that! :D

Wow, I especially like the Wolverine guy, though that would make it hard to hold onto a dog leash.

Thank you very much for the cautions & concern. : ) I miss living in a neighborhood where I’d even consider walking a dog after dark. I could drive to one I guess, but might as well drive to the gym if I’m gonna do that…. I could take our neighbor’s rottweiler, who looks scary but is not in reality much protection, haha, though she’s good company.

Sigh…in Santa Fe I never gave hiking alone a second thought, though I probably should have…then again I was still a martial arts stud then and a little overconfident…now I’m a walking marshmallow!

A’s window was smashed in broad daylight because he left his cell phone sitting visible. But yeah, it’s not a good sign of the area’s general safety.

I’d love to go camping alone but never have because of these sorts of fears. :P I figure I’ll get a German Shepherd and train him/her & then I’ll be good to go :) that’s one weapon no one can take away and use on you, though I wouldn’t want the dog to get hurt…..

I bet they would! :D

I’d like to be like Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix…is she the one or is it a different character who can (among other things) kill people with some kind of supersonic screaming? (X-Men fans, anyone?) Of course Jean Grey has all these near-infinite Phoenix powers like, uh, “being able to rearrange matter on the subatomic level,” etc. LOL What else do you need?!

Yeah! & good point

...I guess I wouldn’t want to emulate her in that way.

But she is the most accessibly rendered modern character who is most like what I imagine the ancient goddesses are supposed to be like. (especially after I checked on Wikipedia to see if I had the right name attached to the right movie image…from the end of the most recent X-Men movie…and saw how many times she is killed off and resurrected, haha)

And why not wish for godlike powers while I’m wishing, haha XD : )

You DO have the right to be here...

...if you are worried, then by all means, invest in some pepper spray and basic self-defense knowledge.

But on the other hand, I’ve lived in some pretty rough neighborhoods in my life, and I think the key thing is just to be alert to one’s surroundings… not just things that send up “alarm” bells, but things that send up “safety” bells—knowing where there is quick access to an open shop (a little more difficult on a trail than walking through the city, granted), other “good” people out on the same walk… there was a study done that said people were more likely to respond in an emergency if they were called on specifically, even if it’s just “hey you! guy with a red hat” so I would always try to have a couple of those people marked out in my head in advance in case I needed to shout to them.

And it’s important to, to remember that things aren’t people—smashing a car window is not at all the same sort of crime as assaulting someone. First off, it’s anoymous. It takes a lot less guts on the perpetrator’s part. Secondly, if it was part of a theft, a car can’t “comply”... it’s not like in a person-to-person situation where you can get mugged and have your wallet taken, but walk away physically unharmed. (Not that I’m trying to negate or judge crimes here… the risks are far greater if something happens to you, definitely, but my point is that the odds of something happening are lower than vandalism against an unattended car.)

Meanwhile, and a bit off topic, Doctors are finding that many people in the northern hemisphere are vitamin D deprived… if you know you’re not getting enough sunlight anyway, and you’re feeling draggy, you might want to have that checked/start taking a supliment. (I am not a doctor. This is not professional advice)

Kalibebti Happy New Year everyone ! : )

Heehee Dr. Smart T. Stuff

Pepper spray, check. Yeah, good point about the difference between attacking a defenseless car window and going after a human being. Yeah…

Yah, I have some self-defense knowledge but am sadly out of practice.

Anyway…it’s a crapshoot…you know, like the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Harrison Ford just pulls out a gun and shoots the guy. LOL As you say, self-defense is luck, attitude, then skill. Avoiding dangerous situations before they happen=attitude, is what I mean.

That’s great advice, about calling on people specifically! I’d never thought of that.

Haha, just this morning I was staring at the milk carton thinking, “So will I feel less depressed if I just drink 32 oz of milk every day?” (or would I just be able to fart my problems away XD) Where IS Vitamin D anyway, besides in sunlight and fortified milk?? The whole northern hemisphere, really? I guess I feel better about having SAD symptoms in Southern California (I do feel pretty silly about that).

Heyyyyy…maybe that’s the whole reason I was cheerier as a kid…my mom made me drink a lot of milk! hmmm….

smartstuff is engaged

Did you wear sunscreen as a kid?

(not a doctor not a doctor not a doctor!)

Also in the pop-nutrition rumor mill—the idea that the increased incidences of SAD are not just “increased awareness and diagnosis” but also through our culture’s increasing awareness of sun damage, and our increased usage of sunscreen. (An “out of the frying pan into the fire” theory if there ever was one.)

What else is D in? Nothing springs to mind… which I think is one of the reasons our bodies make it—there isn’t much out in the environment. Beef liver. Some fish. There’s a bit in egg yolk, I think…

Calling people out puts them on the spot. To yell “help!” generally, people will stand around (like the sheep they are? Never mind me… I’m a bit cynical) thinking someone “more qualified/less busy/stronger/more XYZ generally” will step in. But aim it specifically at someone, and they are forced to face the fact that they can do something, and if they don’t they are acting morally negligent towards their fellow mankind. It’s a lot harder to walk away from then a generic cry.

Kalibebti Happy New Year everyone ! : )

Dr. Notta Doctor

You know…that makes more sense. I did spend loads more time playing outside when I was a kid. And do wear more sunscreen now…

liver! eeeuw!

Yeah, and there’s always just the fear factor of getting hurt yourself if you try to help someone who’s being attacked.

smartstuff is engaged

The Fear Factor

Yes. That sometimes does overwhelm rational thought… on the other hand, there is often times something you can do, even if it’s just calling the police, or just sticking around to be an extra witness/assisting the victim after the attacker has left. I’m not saying that other people can always/should always jump in the middle of whatever’s going on. But there’s so much of a tendency to run away and “see no evil”—and I think that is a true statement of our culture overall. So involving a person directly is a good way of making sure they see what’s happening, which then puts them in the position of doing something about it, even if it’s just a little something.
