I planted a garden full of interesting heirloom and Asian vegetables, and it was so successful that I didn’t have any time to write about it during the growing season! Special recommendations: purple-podded pole beans, hearts of gold cantaloupe (really a muskmelon, and oh so good), spinach (but make sure you plant it in early spring), and black krim tomatoes (they crack on the outside, but the flavor is amazingly sweet). Also, it helps if you work a lot of composted manure into your garden before planting. The organic stuff not only helps things grow but also gives them a much better flavor than they would have otherwise. The artificial stuff can be a supplement, but it’s no substitute, flavorwise or growth-wise.
