Exhaling... 12 months ago

Something dawned on me while practicing swimming this week: I don’t seem to be exhaling enough air before taking a breath. One thing I just started trying which preliminarily seems to be helping with taking side breaths while swimming the front crawl stroke (i.e. “freestyle”) is to breathe out through both my mouth and nose instead of with just my mouth. This way I exhale more air. Although I have gone through the exercise of simultaneously breathing out through both my mouth and nose underwater, this isn’t what I seem to be doing while actually swimming, and I didn’t really think of that before. I look forward to seeing what results I get when I try this while practicing in the coming week.

well...

Why don’t you try making some sound while exhaling underwater. Like “booo” or something. It helped with me. And you can try doing it as an exercise first – stay on the edge of the pool and do sets of underwater exhalation with the sound. Try to empty all your lungs before you go out of the water. After doing the exercise you can try “sound exhalation” with the crawl stroke. ;)

You may just be taking too many breaths? Are you breathing every two strokes or less often than that? I go for three or four depending on the point that I’m at in the workout; at the beginning of the workout, you simply don’t need to be taking as many breaths as you do later on. Plus, this will keep you from cramping up (if you have that problem) later in the workout.

I thought I might have the reverse problem where I’m not taking enough breaths… Initially, I was taking the breath after four strokes, but I’ve found I do somewhat better if I breathe after two instead of four strokes… I didn’t think of needing to alter the number of breaths depending on the stage of the workout, but it makes perfect sense as you describe it. I’ll pay attention to that more the next time I practice…
