I was lucky enough to meet my best friend on a bus stop 16 years ago.
We were 14 years old and I never thought she would be closer to me than my sister and truer than anyone else in my life.
It’s not easy building relationships with others, you have to expose yourself and share way more then we are used to doing.
The major way you know if someone is good friend material is—can you argue with this person? If you can have a serious disagreement and then work it out then you know that you have potential to make it work. My best friend has been with me through some of the darkest times in my life and has loved and supported me unconditionally.
You also have to be willing to give selflessly as well. Even after all these years we still learn new things about each other. I don’t know what I’d do without her…
Another important point is never let anyone come between you, if you’re a fair weather (boy/girl friend) meaning if you disappear when you get a new bf/gf then you probably aren’t best friend material, and should just plan on having a string of acquaintances.
