go to bed earlier (read all 14 entries…)
I'm moving... 12 months ago

this goal to my #1 position on my list. This has been the hardest one for me to conquer and it’s feeling kind of hopeless right now. But it’s also the most important for me to turn around because so many of my other goals hinge on it. In fact I feel my health is dependent on it.

jenny bean here's to a 2010 of adventures taken and goals achieved!

melatonin?

Going to bed earlier was not my hurdle; actually falling asleep was! Once I got in bed I started reviewing all the things on tomorrow’s “to do” list and once that chatter started going it was difficult to relax and fall asleep. Changed the nightly routine to ;take one 3mg melatonin capsule (you can get Melatonin at health food stores)shut off tv, computers etc 30 minutes before I planned to be in bed so the house is quiet. Good luck with this, good sleep is a beautiful thing!

I keep

Melatonin around… just in case I need it. It works well~

I think I need to get me some of this. I have a real hard time turning the chatter off in my head. :o)

Thank you Jenny...

I know about that “chatter” in the head! I have had terrible problems with that at times, but fortunately not now. Now my issue is more of a discipline one. Shutting off the TV on time would go a long ways toward my sleep goal.

You've learned how to control your chocolate cravings...

...and so I’m sure there’s a good chance you can also learn how to control your late-night tv cravings.

I ultimately controlled my late-night tv cravings by not having tv anymore, but I still need to be mindful of my tendency to sit at my computer screen too late into the night. Maybe you’ll inspire me to work harder at logging off early enough to get a good night’s sleep each night. I also think it’s very important for good health.

Best wishes for progress on your new #1 goal!

Thanks

You are right, the discipline aspect is very similar – chocolate v. TV. If I had a high speed internet connection at home I’m afraid I would instead be up late on 43T every night.

I’ve started keeping a journal to help me in tracking progress on this goal.

Thanks for your support Isabella!

Displace busy thoughts

I try to displace “busy” thoughts with “dull” thoughts. Instead of reliving stressful incidents of the day in my head, or other things which keep me awake, I try to think of mundane things such as naming all of the state capitals, trying to name all of the towns that I drive through on a long road trip, naming off all of the people in my contacts list on my cell phone, naming off the names of all of the state quarters in R9’s collection book (in order of course).

Anything like that will help put my mind at ease and make it easier to fall asleep.

I’m getting get sleepy just thinking about all of this.

That sounds...

like hard work! Take the state capitols. If I got to one I couldn’t quite remember it might keep me awake bugging me until I could look it up.

State Capital Aren't Necessarily Everybody's Thing

The idea is to engage your brain into some kind of mental activity that you find to be pleasantly boring. You could mentally thumb through your favorite catalog, what it is doesn’t really matter, as long as it’s something that you find pleasant to think about, yet mundane.
