Christmas Eve 12 months ago

The “Eve” was the big event at our house when I was a kid – we had the entire extended family over to our house for dinner and gifts. Since we didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve dinner was always turkey, and the dessert was always pumpkin pie. :) The adults ate upstairs, and we were all in the basement going berserk and wondering why those grown-ups couldn’t hurry it up so we could get to the gift opening!

Since we didn’t have a fireplace, my Mom bought a life-sized cardboard one to hang our stockings on. :)

Christmas Day was definitely anti-climactic, but I did like having my Dad’s full attention. We always got nuts in the shell in our stockings, and Dad and I would sit around cracking nuts and jokes.

When

I got married, there was a real problem, in that both of our families celebrated on the Eve, so we’d end up pissing off whoever we didn’t visit that night.

Christmas Eve

My family always celebrated on Christmas Eve, too. I think it was because we were lazy and didn’t want to get up early on Christmas day… but anyways… :)

:)

Ah, a fellow Night Owl!

When I was a freshman in college, I intentionally scheduled all my classes for 11:00 or later so I could be up half the night without consequence …

College Classes

I know what you mean. I hated having an 8 or 9 o’clock class. I know it was just me not prioritizing my time right… but I always stayed up late and consequently was really tired or missed an early morning class. I only did that my first semester of college and made a point of scheduling my classes later in the day after that. Laziness. The great common denominator. :)

Actually, for me

it was the opposite – first semester was the only time I was able to do that. After that I took a loooong break and worked full-time a bit, got married and had kids, and then when the youngest hit all-day school I worked by day to pay for school by night.

Laziness....

...can be a great motivator sometimes, ironically. :) And I think it’s a great reason for Christmas Eve-ing. If you can’t sleep in on Christmas, what day can you sleep in? It’s the best present of all. :)
