have our own chickens (read all 11 entries…)
It's "next year"! 11 months ago

Time to reopen! I am excited!

Tommy and I have been planning our coop and chicken yard already. I went to Frey’s Hatchery and while looking at the breeds, Gabriel climbs up on my lap and goes “buck buck buck buck buck.” Awwww!

Go for it!

If your town allows it – and lots do! – I think it’d be great for your family. Nothing beats free range, “home grown” fresh eggs. (:

Having chickens is awesome.

My mum and dad always had chickens when I was growing up, and I just loved them – still do. It’s one of my ultimate goals to keep my own. There’s nothing like taking the kitchen scraps out to the hens and being rewarded with pecked wellies and fresh eggs. They’re so calming. The sound of tiny little day-old chicks all chirruping in a shoebox under an Anglepoise lamp for an incubator is so sweet and hopeful, and watching them grow into adult hens is fascinating. I think it’s great for kids to see nature in action like that – it keeps them connected to where their food actually comes from. They’re really low-maintenance too.

Yup! :D

I loved being raised on our hobby farm and I want the same for my family too! My little sister loves her chickens.

ive said before

that i wanted chickens! id love to have fresh eggs – and its great for the kids to learn about where stuff comes from and all that.

the only problems are

- they attract rats
- who you get to look after them if you go on holiday

but Id have chickens tomorrow! dont you remember me cooing over them when we saw some in a cage at the garden centre, lol!

(oops)

(if you were meaning to reply to TheNewMan, it got sent to me.)

No worries though!

Our chickens never attracted rats per se… our chickens were in a barn and just the BARN attracted rats. If you keep your feed in a chewproof container, like a metal garbage can, and not overfeed your hens, you’ll minimize any rat experiences. I know they CAN be problematic though, even with precautions… the best solution for us was a barn cat!

The vacation aspect is a bit more difficult though unless you have a neighbor or relative that wouldn’t mind checking on them and throwing some scratch down. After all, who do you have pick up your mail and stuff when you’re away?

lol

we dont worry about our mail when we’re away ;o)

we are about to move house which makes asking a neighbour to do this difficult, im not giving up on the idea just yet though :o)

where we live currently has loads of rats even though there are no chickens, so having them here seemed a bad idea… but who knows…

lol

I know just wanted to put it out there again :-)

so new criteria on house hunting front got to be able to have chickens

MsMeffie is looking forward to Christmas with her family x

hmmm

that might drastically reduce our choices!

i think if we find a house which we like where we could keep chickens we can see that as a bonus, rather than a requirement! x

I don’t remember anyone ever saying that the chickens attract rats. Foxes, yes, and we lost quite a few that way, but I never saw or heard speak of rats around our chickadees.

We only once

lost a hen to a fox and that was in the middle of a VERY severe snow storm. He found the barn, spent the night and had a meal. (Ironically he took the oldest chicken we had…)

Now WEASLES… We lost a BUNCH of chickens to THOSE.

Weasels?!

I don’t think we had any of those! Must be a regional thing. I never really resented the fox taking our hens. I figured if he was smart enough to get through all the barriers we put in place to stop him – doors wedged shut, chicken wire and so on – he deserved a feast. Plus I loved Fantastic Mr Fox and sided with him over Boggis and Bunce and Bean (one short, one fat, one lean)!
