grow an herb garden (read all 4 entries…)

So far the basil and oregano are simple to keep alive. Make sure I open the blinds at least every other day, and water when dry.

Parsley is being picky. The leaves turned yellow, so I moved her out of the sun, but then the water was not drying and she was wilting. So fearing root rot I put her outside in the shade to dry – and she looks great, but still wet. So I’ll leave her on the table today and see how she looks.

Either way, it’s going way better than previous attempts at growing, so I’m thrilled.

kaden why bat your eyes at the shadow side of reality?

will they put out continuously if you keep them indoors or do they eventually die?

Basil will keep growing until it produces seeds, as it is an annual. Keep the flower heads picked and a plant usually will grow for a year or two before you need to plant a new one indoors. In the garden, I grow it as an annual and freeze any I can’t use up.

Parsley is a biennial. Grow it as an annual for best flavor whether indoors or out. When the first flower stalks start to form, plant new ones and ditch the old ones, as they get bitter once they shift gears towards reproduction.

Oregano is a perennial. If you take good care of it you should get at least five years of good growth indoors, and if you have a garden it will last nearly indefinitely as it self-sows and spreads like crazy (give it lots of room!)

Basil should keep producing if you pick off the flowers. I over-harvested the parsley so it died, and I’m not 100% sure about oregano, but I think it’s the same as basil.
