I’ve run across both good indie bookstores and bad ones (ones totally full of romance novels). I try to buy from them as much as I can, usually finding some obscure stuff. I have fond memories of raiding one in Saratoga Springs, NY with my best friend who was hunting for philosophy books, and they were definitely loaded. Sometimes it’s completely worth it, sometimes it’s not.
