It seems like there is a lot of differing viewpoints about bartending courses. Should I take a course to get licensed or should I just apply at a smaller local bar and work my way up?

I’m in college now, and I need some sort of income to keep up with my bills. Since I have a few night courses, I would ideally work weekends and a few weeknights. Should I opt to pass a bartending course, I know where I can sign up and get a discount on admission? Or should I apply right away for the job and work on fewer tips and pay now?
