learn sign language (read all 6 entries…)
I did give up on this... But 11 months ago

At university they do free language courses, and I’ve been debating whether to take one. I couldn’t decide whether to take either an advanced course in German, a basic course in BSL or none at all. Or even start a new language completely, but I don’t think I’ll do that.
I wouldn’t have to be assessed if I didn’t want to be, can just get a certificate of attendance, so if I didn’t feel comfortable I wouldn’t have to do assessments, so I don’t see any harm! It’s only about 3 hours a week too, so I think I probably will take it up for the next semester, and if I like it, also for year 2, but could take German for year 2 or something, I really don’t know! :D Probably wouldn’t have time for it in my final year unless I could take it as part of my course, but then I would have to do assessments… Hmm, I really did hate German oral exams!!

Personally

I’d go for a basic course in BSL. It’s always useful to be able to communicate in many different languages, and a Level 1 course really isn’t that hard =D
Plus, you can’t really do a BSL oral exam. It’s much more relaxed just being able to sign.

Or if you decide to do German, it’s always good to at least learn basic BSL finger spelling – from experience, even the most basic knowledge can cause greater understanding between a hearing and a deaf person.

Yeah, I think I probably will do the BSL this coming semester, which will give me a feel for what the lessons are like and what it’s like signing. If I decide I don’t like it, then next year I might do German rather than BSL. Also, even the basic course has 2 hours of classes and one hour of e-learning a week. 18 weeks in the semester, 3×18 = 54 hours. Should be able to learn a fair amount in 54 hours! =D

Cool, 54 hours is quite a lot for a semester =D
Also, you should try and find a deaf person(s) to practice on, or at least attempt communication with some. It really does help you improve your skills! Plus, they generaly appreciate others learning their language, much like any other language!
