Brainstorming session: common phrases used in public services? 11 months ago

You may have be familiar with resources like “Spanish for the Health Care Field” (to help doctors and nurses serve Spanish-speaking patients better). Well – I want to create a set of electronic flashcards (and maybe other resources) on “Spanish for the Library Field”. There are a few vocab lists out there (like this great and comprehensive one) but no library-specific phrase books or resources for actual practice (that I’ve found so far).

To that end, I am brainstorming a bunch of common phrases/sample interactions that librarians in public services might use frequently in working with the public. I’m talking the daily grind sort of stuff; obviously for more complicated reference questions, different vocabulary would be necessary.

I can think of a lot of ideas on my own (i.e. the bathrooms are over there, do you have a library card? etc.), but seeing as I don’t yet have a lot of front lines experience, I thought I would try putting it out there to the rest of you. I’m interested in common interactions with patrons of all ages, preferably those that are less obvious but common all the same.

Thanks!

ETA: in case anyone without any Spanish background wants a resource for REALLY basic library-speak, there’s also this pamphlet from the DuPage Library System.

Phrases

In the academic library I worked at, we would need:
  • The stapler is in the copy room
  • The copy room is behind that post
  • Let me show you how to print (or else, a very long set of site-specific directions)
  • That software is available in the lab on the second floor
  • That book is on the fourth floor
  • That book is in the Art Library
  • Here is a map. Here is where we are. Here is where the Art Library is.

Do you know about REFORMA? If you have a long-term interest in serving Spanish speaking patrons, you may want to be part of that. One of my professors from library school is active. They have a resource page with links to some of the sort of thing you’re talking about. I particularly like p. 6 of this pdf—the Dewey Decimal table in Spanish!

Nice.

Yep, I know about REFORMA! Haven’t been involved with them yet b/c I can only really stand to be involved in so many affiliates/sections of ALA at one time. Maybe someday.

Thanks for the link though (and the ideas; directions and prepositions are supa-crucial, I suspect!). The REFORMA page led me to this page from WebJunction w/ a lot of great stuff. Tons of reference material. Now to adapt it for my own study!
