I was pretty lucky, to be honest. He was doing a rally at my university, and somehow, by chance, I was able to make my way up to the front…and after he made this incredible speech, he stepped off the platform to chat and shake hands with those around him. In my big moment, I was overcome and awestruck, and though I had rehearsed all the profound things I would say to this man if I ever had the slim chance of meeting him, all I could muster out was that “Dude, you’re awesome” which elicited a chuckle and a thanks. We chatted about little after that, as he had to move on, but it was definitely one of the most defining moments of my life, and having the chance to look the then future president in the eye and have an exchange and shake his hand was probably one of those things that you just never forget, especially from such a historically precedent breaking perspective. Plus, I’m going into politics, so it was just an extremely inspiring moment as well. Thank goodness I brought my camera that day!
