sabryn okay...how about a calm December?
Just got my second freelancing job! Nothing big, but it’ll pay more than my last one. :) Might even be a regular client, too.
Squee!

Squee!
I was just wondering how you started doing the freelance thing, because that’s what I want to do. I don’t have any real official experience, but I’m very good at English and have edited classmates’ papers in high school and college. I just wanted to know what steps you took, exactly. Did you advertise online? How did you get the word out? How did you figure out pricing/payment? Any info you want to give me would be welcome. :D Thanks!

And a very good friend.
The first job was copyediting a book for a very, very small press. (How small? The royalty checks I’ve received so far haven’t covered the cost of the paper and ink used to print the book out for editing. I did that one for experience only.) I got the job because my boyfriend knows one of the guys who works for the press.
The second was a recommendation from a friend and former coworker. She freelances for this man, as well (she’s a graphic designer), and recommended he call me when he needed an editor. I’ve done two small projects for him in the past year. So I hardly have a booming business…yet.
My marketing has been very lax, I admit. I’ve applied for jobs on craigslist and other job sites (be very, very careful about craigslist; you’ll get more spam than job offers there). But I haven’t explored any direct marketing.
I have a website, but without a way to drive traffic there, I doubt it’s doing me much good.
Pricing and payment are also shaky areas for me. I’ve been charging per page thus far (except for the book, of course; I get a percentage of the royalties). But then I learned that if the job isn’t what it was described at the outset, you get screwed that way. So I’m trying to come up with an hourly rate; of course, having had no job offers since then, it’s been a moot point.
I wish I had more advice to give, but as you can see, I’m not doing so hot myself. :) One guy did recommend that I post flyers on campus advertising term paper editing; maybe you could try that to get started. Good luck!
