stop wasting time
I do many things to waste time 10 months ago

I get to the office and read all my e-mails. I check my hotmail account several times during the day. Facebook also.
I think of a topic and check it on the internet for quite some time.
I also do work but at the end of the day I am unhappy because when I do things I am not supossed to do my conscience shows me that I am not being productive and it is an odd feeling. I checked on new and used cars yesterday since I am thinking of buying a car. I also checked on cruises because I am thinking of going in one. I am bored out of my mind lately with the horrible weather and dealing with a lazy ex who wont get a job for almost two years and pay some darn child support! asshole!
Okay, what was the topic? oh yes, me wasting my time. There you have it another waste on time about something that is not within my control.
I have also been watching a lot of TV at home and chatting on the internet.. nice. :(!

We are sailing on the same boat!

Hi There,

You are not alone dear, I do the same things too & probably more.

I get to the office and read all my e-mails. I check my hotmail & yahoo account several times during the day & chat through Gmail (my chat box is always there minimised) so that i can reply to my friends between my work. Facbooking & Tagging on boring days.

This definately adds on to my sinfully wasted time.

But among this wasted time, I always make sure I do my office work too. Perhaps only able to complete 75% of the workload I have.

Balance 25% of the workload which i classify as non-urgent stuffs will always get postponed to the next day & the day after… As the saying goes ” If you postpond a work to tommorrow it will actually get stagnant for 10days or worst still, it never gets done!”
It’s very true in my case.

And I watch a lot of TV during weekends when i should be revising & catching up on my online studies & preparing for my assignments. Even if I somehow manage to get myself to sit down & study…its only for an hour or so & I will get distracted easily & Phooof… off i go to watch TV or surf the net…

So at the end of the day what i gain from the wasted time is guilty conscious, getting more & more slaggish, doing alot of last minute work & burning the midnight oil to submit my assignments by the deadline.

To think of it… Its totally NOT WORTH IT!

But I still yet to find the discipline to change myself & make full use of my precious time for my career, life & studies.

It feels good to not be alone

Hi There,

Thank you for your comment. It makes feel better to know there are others in the same situation. I grew up very spoiled, without discipline. As an adult though, you have to learn to discipline yourself. I have times when I do refrain (to an extent) from going on the internet and wasting time. It makes me feel so good. It makes me be in control of my instant gratification needs.
I think there is a reason on the background when we look for ways to waste time. For instance, going on hotmail and finding correspondence makes me feel like people think of me and I am wanted. Perhaps is all low self-esteem. My job is flexible so, If I wanted to do something good for myself in the free time I get while at work, I can do something productive instead or reading random things on the internet.
I could take a few minutes every hour to stretch and do a little walk in the hall; something all of us need for our backs and to relax.

I also do things in a rush when I have plenty of time to do them right and at a slower pace.

Again, I think all of it is lack of self-discipline and low self-esteem.

My plan is to reward myself when I don’t waste time and punish myself (lightly) when I mess up.

Best of luck to you. If you would like to, keep me posted of your progress.

Have a great day!

Gio

SELF-DISCIPLINE is the word!

Hi Gio,

I totally agree to what u said about the Lack of self-discipline & low self esteem.

What I did to improve my current situation?

What I actually did is to, write up a list of TO DO TASK of the day! & have it on my desk where I can refer to it now & then.

Be it my office work, my studies or my extra involvements in my company meetings & committee. I prioritize them & list it down in different colours.

(RED – for urgent matters,
YELLOW – for current issues,
PINK – for tasks which are pending for some reasons beyond my control,
BLUE – for non-urgent matters &
GREEN – for tasks completed)

I list out the things to be done each day… which means I have 7 “TO DO LIST” for a week.

It actually helped me get into ACTION when I see the whole list of task UNDONE!

And once a task is done I strike it off in GREEN
So its really motivating to see alot of GREEN stikes compared to having alot of RED ALERTS! So this keeps me goin…

So far I have been coping well with this scheme…

But to tell u the truth… in the initial stage this plan actually BACKFIRED… bcos although i came out with the “TO DO LIST” everyday… I just stare at it blankly & reading it over and over again but didn’t do much about it.

But as time goes, this LIST thingy really helped me to keep track of my MISSIONs…

So the moral of the story is: “SELF-DISCIPLINE” is the KEY to all SUCCESS

All the best to you too.
Have a Great Weekend!

Cheers.

Keeping a wasted time log

Dear Rathai,

I think your color system for prioritizing is great!
I will try it myself.

Today I wrote down everything I did since I got to the office (other than work-related activities).
From checking out sales at deparment stores, how much a swimming pool costs, dating websites, checking my three e-mail accounts, facebook.. jeez! the list goes on and on.

Then I went on a website on how to stop wasting time at work. It actually recommends to keep a log of your “time waste” activities. One cannot help but to feel ashamed. Just keeping the time waste log takes time and energy, so you feel you should not waste more time.

I feel motivated to substitute my time wasters with productive activities.

Thanks for your advice.

Have a great weeked!

Gio

Keeping track of our time wasters!

Hi Gio,

Keeping a log of the time waster activities sounds like an effective idea. It will refrain us from going off track too much.

My time waster list definately gonna be long… I just sat down to write down the list of time waster activities… It took me sometime though…

Just looking at the long list is SHOCKING!

Ooh Yeah! it sure motivated me to keep the time waster list shorter as possible as time goes.

Great! Thanks for sharing with me this tip.

Keep goin Gal… We r on the right track…

Cheers,
Rathai
