Collectorofcats can hardly wait for the asparagus to pop up so it will be truly Spring

learn all I can about traumatic brain injury (TBI) so that I can help my daughter recover as fully as she can from it and also educate others about it. (read all 23 entries…)
I Read An Article In The Kanasa City Star This Morning

It is titled ‘Teen’s football injury reshapes future, family’. I tried to create a link to it and even tried to copy the whole article to post but I couldn’t save it for some reason which tells me our pc may still be screwed up or some other problem. All I know is that other than how the injury occured, word for word, it could have been written about our daughter and the last four years of our family and rage and the destruction to our home.

I’m sorry for how you’ve suffered over your daughter’s TBI. I once was a VR counselor who specialized in TBI over 10 years ago. I’m sure things have changed a lot since then as far as treatment and rehab goes. Has she seen a neuropsychologist or neuropsychiatrist? They specialize in treatment and testing of people with special neurological conditions. They can trace an injury down to what lobe of the brain. They might even be able to help you find a family support group to help you understand and deal with your daughter’s behavior. I think the hardest thing for family’s to deal with afterwards are the personality changes and problems modulating anger and frustration of their loved one. The changes make the person unpredictable and frustrating to help even though you desperately want to. If she can get into a good rehab program with people who are trained to help her, her anger and frustration may improve. Social Security can be extremely frustrating to deal with. Just don’t give up. Keep applying. Keep searching for answers. You might be surprised how things will go at a hearing with a live administrative law judge. Definitely hire an atttorney who specializes in SSA. These attorneys don’t get paid if they don’t win for you. Then they get about 25% of the back pay. This is well worth it if it means she’ll gets some benefits. Even if she gets SSI, there is a work incentive program. If you have a sympathetic judge and a good lawyer things could definitely go your way. If I might could help feel free to email me. Take care.

Thank you for the offer of help.

Right now we are just living from day to day. Rachel is on a waiting list for 2 different TBI rehab programs in our state. With the economy and budget cuts, she’ll have to conrinue to wait.
I know from her behavior and anger management problems that she has frontal lobe syndrome. Also, when she first was injured they told us what part of the brain was affected and what to expect including problems with unappropriate speech, deficiiency in math skills and problems with dealing with day to day issues that call for mature judgement. We did not expect the anger, and the distructive behavior that has come about and actually gotten worse in the last 2 years.
As far as SSI, she talks about getting a job one day and about how it is a waste the next. People telling her her deficiancies hasn’t helped her in that area. I’ve already spoken to a couple of lawyers and think it might be better for Rachel to be already in a rehab program or anything before we try the SSI route again.

Collectorofcats has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
