That’s what I’m calling myself. Yeah I know it’s not PC to use the word retard but that rule goes out the window when you apply it to yourself. It’s frustrating me that I’m not picking up web publishing as quickly as I’d like. Okay so I haven’t done the course yet but I have been shown a few times. There’s just a couple of things that I’m not getting the hang of and I don’t like to keep asking the same person all the time because then they will start calling me a webtard. At this point I’d prefer to leave the web stuff to my minion and just do the writing really but better to have another string to my bow even at the risk of feeling webtarded at first…

I know

Maybe I’ve come across a lot of intolerant people as well as a lot of kind people. I am essentially a people pleaser and am always nervous about inconveniencing people.

I guess you could call my job hard-core IT; I work as an Oracle database administrator. Early in my IT career (my actual college degree is in Textile Design!) I was fortunate to have a designated mentor, someone who volunteered to coach me through my first year of computer programming. It is now many years later and sometimes I actually “know stuff” and find that people come to me for help. I really appreciate it when someone comes to me with a question when they have already invested some time troubleshooting. “I’ve tried A and this happened. Then I tried B and that didn’t work so I’m wondering if I should try C or D next?” A couple times I’ve ended up spending a lot of time coaching someone through something or showing them an especially neat trick/shortcut. These people sent nice emails to my manager saying they appreciated my help – which was a nice thing. Maybe you are already doing this – but making cheat-sheets for yourself can be useful too. When I am first learning something new I am sure I’ll remember it. But if I don’t do it frequently the subtleties can fade. So if I make a step-by-step instructions sheet (as if I were going to train someone else) that helps me reinforce what I just learned. Also, you may find that your manager may appreciate a how-to manual for other new-hires?? I’m blathering. I was trying to agree with KissMiss that there are a lot of people who love to share what they know. I hope you can find some of those at your new place!!

I have some other places where I’m sure we could arrange a lesson too. Way more scenic but very annoyingly the picture wouldn’t show.

The course is on web publishing so pretty basic compared to what you’re used to and I’m getting there slowly! I’m having some 1-to-1 tuition on Wednesday at last. Yippee!
