...take the kids 6 week summer holiday off work one year (when they’re all old enough to appreciate it) and hire a car and just drive. I want to figure what is realistic to achieve in that length of time and still enjoy without being too manic!
I daren’t even start thinking about the cost on this one. Can someone recommend a decent motel chain/car hire company so I can start pricing up?!

Marriot, Days Inn, Holiday Inn. There are huge price difference in the three but those three are in most moderate size towns.
Choose some sites that are must see then go from there. We love the Frommer’s travel guides because they have preplanned “trips” for your with ideas. For example, San Franscisco showed maps of what to do if you are there for 3 days, 5 days or a week including nearby areas.
One thing I’ve wanted to do is take the train on a Western States National Park Trip. That covers most of the huge national parks like the Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, etc and you don’t need to do the driving:)

You can seriously greatly minimize your hotel time by staying with 43t friends…at least this one. I would definitely open up my home to you for the chance to meet you and hear your adventures!
