embrace change (read all 2 entries…)
There are many changes 8 months ago

occuring in the “health care system” that I work through. For many reasons, my primary division has closed down temporarily. It makes our staff the nomads of the hospital, being placed on inadequately staffed divisions. Also, there are changes being implemented in some of the more complex equipment we use. As usual, people tend to grouse about all the changes. I’m keeping my mind centered on the opportunity to learn some new things and to become more flexible within the system.

Every night the staff varies. So, every shift I tell every staff member how happy I am to be working with each of them that night. In the morning I thank every staff member for how they made the night go better. I get so sick of the complaining, and will fight it for my peace of mind.

Love your attitude, MamaKitty

I’m sure your co-workers appreciate it, too.

:)

It makes a big difference to me. I think some people feel better within themselves when they complain and I think some others are okay with listening to it. I tend to integrate it and it stays with me, even after work. My prevailing attitude is really helping me feel pretty good about work.

I think most people

aren’t even aware that they’re complaining so much. I discovered this about myself, and I’m still struggling with trying to change. I always thought of it as just discussing how things were. It was a rude awakening to discover it was more.

Hopefully your positivity will give multiplied good returns. For you and for those around you.

Your insight is

a wonderful strength. And I have my whiney days, too. But generally I am supportive of a calm, fairly happy work environment.

I love...

coworkers like you!! They always make the day go well!

Speaking of changes in the healthcare system…have you had to use HIT software? Is it as terrible as it looks? I did a report on it, and here, everybody except the records department pretty much hate it. Do you think there could be a better way?

I am not familiar

with HIT software. We do not do computer charting yet. In the future we will be using we will be using Epic software. I know some people who have recently been trained and they have mixed reviews as far as user friendliness. Are you familiar with Epic?

That's what they use here.

The records department is in love with it, the nurses and younger doctors are indifferent, and the older doctors are retiring early to avoid using it.

I think the biggest problem they had with it here is that it didn’t support the lab activities they do at our student health center. They have to work with the area hospital’s lab, and there isn’t a way to record what they’re doing. I know they still send x-rays by courier rather than electronically.

I should go dig out my report and reread it. (It was a group project, so I don’t remember all of it.)

I just finished

my two day training. I am really excited about the clarity of communication EHR will provide. Becoming proficient will be a challenge. I am amused by the differences in comfort levels with different users. I am slow slow slow….but I’m learning a lot and would rather ride the wave than get stressed out.

Studies have been done that show morale and productivity decrease when EHR is first introduced. To quote the trainer, “They’re (the hospitals) ready for it.” So I wonder what that means. Apparently, the nurses are still carrying the same patient load without any accomodation to the staff or the patients for this learning period.

I will have two weeks PTO starting Thursday morning. I may come in to the hospital to play on the program’s “playground”. It will be worth using my time off to learn in a less stressful situation, than on-the-job application.

I wish

that I could work on this kind of software. I don’t know if I have the right background to do so, though. It’s good that you’re finding the software easier to use than the nurses here are.

MamaKitty has gotten 10 cheers on this entry.
