get over my cannula complex (read all 2 entries…)
Every patient needs a line in... 4 years ago

God, I need to sort this out. I am going to have to put cannulas into near enough every patient I come into contact with. I need to be able to do it and not panic that I won’t. I have done it but unfortunately have failed more times than succeeded. It isn’t hard. Why am I so crap?

I MUST SORT IT OUT BEFORE I QUALIFY.

Good Luck

I’ve been doing well with my cannulas in paramedic training, but I’m still afraid of hurting people. I also don’t have a good idea of what size needle to use, but figure that will come with time.

use the biggest

one possible, period. NEVER EVER use a 22 g if you can help it, they are just useless. And if you don’t think you can get one in, please don’t stick the pt 20 times before they get to the hosptial…. :) :)

I always find I can go one size bigger than I think I can.
I don’t worry too much about hurting people, Most of the time, they are already in pain, so think of it as establishing something to kill the pain!

Needle Gauge

I usually grab a 20 because that’s what I’m comfortable with. There were a couple elderly ladies that I went with a 22. Those were in the ER during my clinical time there and the nurse overseeing me recommended it. I know on trauma I need to go bigger, but I haven’t had a bad trauma patient yet (just some fall victims).

You are not crap. Remember you are doing a good thing – it’s good you care so much about getting it right. An essential quality that will ensure you succeed :)
