Get over my fear of spiders (read all 2 entries…)
Yikes!

Out of all of my goals i am most pestimistic about this one. I will probably learn Spanish completely before i will rid this fear. I literally will freeze up and sometimes cry at the sight of these 8 legged freaks. I want to get a one bedroom by this time next year or after I graduate next May but I don’t know what will happen if i’m alone in my apartment and nobody is there to kill the spider. I don’t even want to type “Arachnophobia” into a search engine because i know pictures of spiders will pop up. I’m going to need a lot of support on this one…

re: "not funny" (spider pic) (no spider pic)

LOL … (sorry)
(knowing you didn’t like to even type “spider” ... as soon as I saw that spider, and it is a creepy-looking spider, I could imagine your reaction.)
Sorry I laughed at your fear, but sometimes I appreciate others’ mean humor.

(And if you do caporeia them, can I see the video?)

And since I’m here, and if you have a “journey” “that far,” I’d start by imagining typing “spiders” in a search engine, or unplug your keyboard & practice typing it for awhile. Look up various spider-type in a simple dictionary that probably wouldn’t have spider pictures of specific spiders. That way you can learn about them before seeing them. But don’t do so many that you dream about them.
Do what they do in Harry Potter & imagine them with roller skates; or boogeying-down to Disco, or giving a poetry-jam to a group of Uber-chic spiders in their underwear.

Good to hear that you’re looking to face your fears!

Great Advice

It’s okay that you laughed. I laugh at myself when I look back on how I react when I see or think about spiders. Even writing this right now makes me squirm.

I will try to read about spiders instead of using a search engine where pictures would most definitely pop up. That scene in Harry Potter almost killed me. Those gigantic things were so gross I almost cried. But that is very good advice. I should just picture them not as they are. The worst thing about spiders for me is how they scurry around so fast! ugh. I need to stop writing I am going to have nightmares… Baby steps.

Thanks for the tips IdkBrbLoL :-)

"spider died-her" (ideas for arachnophobics)

It occurred to me today, as againnn, I was about to remind someone that “the little-ones” in our lives are usually the ones who eat the nastier bugs who are trying to feed on us!
So, try to learn & focus on the good things that they do for us. (That helps me a lot; as it is not natural for me to like spiders either!)

Another idea is to write an illustrated story about a baby spider who needs to grow up little-by-little.
Another idea is to make a good-sized stuffed spider. Give it a broken leg, so you have to “take care” of it. Talk to it. (I know; a little childish – but it could be fun.)
edit: OR draw a cartoon – something silly in the vein of his snake pic z cutest snake pic ever!! http://justcapshunz.icanhascheezburger.com/2011/09/22/funny-captions-sssssuccessss-at-lassssst/

Invest in a cat...

I don’t know about you, but I saw that picture of that spider (above), and I cringed. I have a similar phobia of those little *$%kers…

But, I will say, working through the fear is number one, and exposure has everything to do with it. Now, I happened to choose natural settings to expose myself to spiders, and it has helped to reduce my panic reaction outdoors. Now, the problem with this approach is that God forbid one of these suckers decides to drop from the ceiling into my shower (which happened)...yes, we have a serious problem. And, torn shower curtains :)

I have sought the assistance of my cat who I have trained to respond to the command, “Get that fly” for anything that has more than four legs. This too has reduced my panic reaction, and seriously helped when I lived in a basement apartment. Though I think she has begun to resent my demanding nature in this regard as she has had to gobble some arachnids that clearly tasted funky.

Final statement…EXPOSURE THERAPY

Great Advice

I am not much of a cat person but I am much more NOT a spider person so if getting a cat would take care of my anxiety I may go get a cat tomorrow. I have a puppy now… maybe I can train him to eat spiders for me. Seeing spiders in their natural environment is definitely better than seeing them in my apartment (they don’t pay rent and we not invited to any sleep overs!). I probably would have slipped and busted my head open if a spider was in the shower with me. I don’t know what I would do if a spider was in my car while I was driving. I really need to get over this fear before I have kiddos. I don’t want them to be afraid of spiders because their crazy mom made them afraid.

Thanks again for the advice :-)
