have our own chickens (read all 11 entries…)
They're here! 7 months ago

Our chicks arrived today, all of them, plus the ducklings my mom ordered. What a LOT of them, too! So cute and fuzzy, all cheeping and sleepy. Gabriel got a big smile out of them, but then lost interest, lol.

As well, last week, my mom got in contact with the neighbor who had several groups of chicks for sale. Some were a few weeks old, and some were just a few days old, and she bought a miscellaneous bunch. They are Araucana chickens, and the older two she bought are crossed with silkie chickens. I don’t want to be mean, but these araucanas are UGGGGGGLY! But… they lay greenie-blue eggs, so that’s kind of cool, and my mom loves variety.

Primarily eggs

Though if we had ended up with enough roosters we were considering butchering some. We have three permanent roosters who will die of old age, and only three or four young ones from the looks of it. Not quite enough to warrant Chicken Butchering Night.

Some areas do allow you have chickens, but only hens. When we visited Tommy’s family, a house down the road had a few!

I think so, yes

And there really isn’t any point in a rooster if you just want chickens for eggs. You don’t “need” one.

I don’t think people realize that if the chickens are kept clean, there really isn’t a smell. Chicken manure is wonderful fertilizer, too!

You’d have to look up the bylaws for your town. I just googled “keeping chickens bylaw” with our town name and province and got the correct link right away.

I really want to keeps bees one day, too, but that’s still a bit off in the future. I have heard of people successfully having a hive in town. They put a hedge up near the hive so that when the bees fly out of the hive, they have to go up and over the hedge and they will then continue to fly above head level. Then they aren’t a threat! (Just on an interesting note, I’ve been stung by wasps, yellow jackets and hornets, but I have never been stung by a bee.)

You and me, both. Our neighbors are too close, even with our 13 acres!
