...that you’re still pursuing this goal.
This June will be the 30th anniversary of the Editors’ Association of Canada. Ima be at the national conference, here in Toronto. (OK, Ima be speaking at it.)
In my experience, some of the coolest people on the planet are editors and proofreaders.
Go you!

...I just finished a book I can highly recommend to freelancers of any stripe:
Michelle Goodman’s My So-Called Freelance Life: How to Survive and Thrive as a Creative Professional for Hire.
Not only is it hugely helpful, it’s funny and well-written too. It’s the book I wish I’d had when I was starting out as a freelancer: I learned most of these lessons the hard way.
Goodman also has a terrific blog aimed at freelancers (or those who’d like to be). Check out The Anti 9-to-5 Guide: Practical Career Advice for Women Who Think Outside the Cube.

I’ll definitely have to check these out. (As I discovered this week, I’m already learning lessons the hard way. Time to restructure my fees!)
I wish I could go to the editor’s conference – that would be so cool! Alas, there is no money for such at the moment. I hope your presentation goes well!
I completely agree with you about editors. In fact, I could have gone one of two ways after school: editing or technical writing. I joined a mailing list for each, and followed them for a few years. The people on the editors’ list were great – nice, helpful, people I could be friends with. There were some people like that on the TW list, but most…were not. (That’s the nicest way to phase it.) I decided that, if I had to choose, I’d rather be lumped with the editors than the tech writers. So here I am. :)
