Look on the bright side! 6 months ago

I was just scanning my goals, thinking how hard it is to make any progress on anything when you can’t sit down, and can only stand up for 90 seconds at a time, and lying in bed leaves you either doped up or throbbing in pain. Then I noticed this goal, forgotten in the time-consuming races of running my business and becoming a writer for more than six months. On the bright side of a back injury, I’ve lost about 10 lbs, and my waistline is back down to 34” or a little less. That puts my WtHR at 0.511. I am only 0.75” away from my goal.

I wonder why I’m losing weight. I would have thought the inactivity would make my weight go up. But I suppose pain causes a higher heart-rate, which burns more calories. or it could be giving up alcohol because of the pain meds Whatever. At least there’s an upside!

Comments:

Can you take a muscle relaxer?

Is it muscle strain, tear, or a pinched nerve? Pain does make muscles clench, even if it’s nerve pain (I know!) so relaxing your muscles could bring relief sooner.

muscles and pain

The problem is a herniated L5-S1 disk causing general swelling which impinges on the Sciatic nerve. This results in a) pain, b) incredible muscle cramping and c) loss of feeling.

I’m not using muscle relaxants, as they are not recommended in this case. Although they would help enormously with the cramping and pain, they would also decrease the strength of the core back muscles which need to hold my spine straight, and that would result in worse swelling.

Thanks for the idea, though. I’m trying TENS, an electrical discharge treatment, to relax just the muscles that are tensing, but haven’t had much luck.

Argh, I do feel for you

TENS didn’t do me any good either. Fortunately, as my problem is in the cervical disks I can take the muscle relaxers, which don’t help the cause of the pain but at least relieve the associated muscle spasms. Can you at least drink? :-)

choices choices

I’m debating that right now.

I’m taking Percocet, which reacts with alcohol, worsening the effects of both. While that isn’t a big concern, the potential overload on the liver is.

I’ve elected to stick with the Perc for now, and forego a nice cold Martini. I figure I need to stick with one or the other.

Wishing you the best

And hoping for a speedy recovery. (Then you can have that Martini!)
