Early retirement? 6 months ago

Dunno if this is going to happen now, with the downturn in the global investment marketplace. I guess I’m fortunate that I don’t have a defined contribution plan, but I might have to delay my retirement later, if I don’t get my mortgage and other debts paid off.

I’ve heard some very sad stories about some people who have been retired for 5 years having to go back to work full-time recently! That must have been very difficult for them.

What bothers me about the workplace is that employers used to complain that employees weren’t loyal enough. With all that has been going on lately concerning layoffs and downsizing, it’s no wonder employees are no longer loyal to their employers! For some families, I’ve heard about both husband and wife being laid off within weeks of each other. Even for some firms that are doing well, financially, it’s been “fashionable” to lay off staff. Disgusting.

Fashionable?

The employers I know who are laying off are agonizing. But then again, they’re all in the nonprofit sector.

That's not who I meant, Petersky...

I was talking about the private sector firms that are still making tons of money, using the downturn as an excuse to cut staff, even if they don’t have a surplus of people. For example, our banks in Canada are still making billions of dollars each year, yet I find that customer service is getting poorer whenever I go into my bank to talk to a real person!

I’m sure it must be very difficult right now in your field, C.

Well...OK

The foundations aren’t giving as much money, that’s true.

Other nonprofits are in a horrible place of hurt, if they were dependent on state or county funds. We don’t get money from these government entities. We got a two-year contract last year with one city, so that’s safe; and the other city – well, we don’t ask them for much in the first place – I hope they’ll just give us the same amount again.

Meanwhile, our congregational support is slightly up. Our fundraiser this spring was wildly successful. We raised about twice what we had originally set our goal for.

And we’re a tiny, scrappy little agency. Our expenses are pretty small. I think we’ll make it through the year or two at least – and here’s hoping that things will brighten as we move along.
