How to afford this 6 months ago

I’ve been trying to figure out how I can afford to do this. If I can find a job that pays a sign-on or relocation bonus, then I’ll be set. Otherwise, it is down to paying off debts and saving up money. I hope that I’m able to find a way to do this in 10 months, when my lease is up.

If you have a college degree

you could go teach English in Korea. Tons of people do it to pay off debts and save up money, and the country is full of amazing food, people, and hiking/climbing. Check out Canadian Connection if you’re interested (not the way I went, but the way I’ll go if I go back).

Scott back to the monotony

An interesting idea

Any idea what kind of salary that pays? I was thinking more in terms of finding a new software engineering job that would pay me to relocate to someplace like Boston or Raleigh, but this would be a tempting idea also.

Oh, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t pay anything like a software engineering job. They pay for your plane tickets both ways and an apartment, and then, depending on the job, somewhere between 1.9-2.5 mil won a month (which is about $2000, but it fluctuates w/ the exchange rate). At the end it’s customary for schools to give a bonus equal to one month’s salary. It’s not a huge amount, but it’s certainly far more than anyone needs to cover their cost of living, and you can travel quite a bit within the country while saving over half your money.

Scott has gotten 3 cheers on this entry.
