Help my father recover from his stroke (read all 81 entries…)
Dad's in hospital again 4 months ago

At least this time it’s planned.

He had heart surgery yesterday to replace a faulty replacement heart valve and my mum and brother saw him in intensive care last night. He was in surgery nearly 8 hours and mum would have been in a much worse state if the waiting room didn’t have a TV and Wimbledon tennis to distract her somewhat!

Just hope that he recovers as well as he did last time (November 07) when the heart valve was put in. Can’t believe that it failed as it came from a faulty batch. It’s bad enough to go through this once but twice is unnecessary. I also feel for all those who have also needed their faulty heart valve replacing.

This is not fair – but when has life ever been fair?

jansu after two weeks away, feel like a new start!

Thinking of you and your Dad and hoping with you that he recovers well.

Not fair at all – after one operation of such importance and to recover so well the first time!

Thank you - you're right it's not fair

He recovered so well last time but this time it’s a bigger operation and he’s in pain despite the morphine and is expected to be in intensive care longer. He’s strong and stubborn so he should do well.

Waynesworld is slowly feeling better.

Eight hours! :(

Hope that your raw emotions can find rest after this ordeal, a second time. Wishing your father a complete recovery. I am certain that you will be there for your mother as well. {{{{{{{PurpleHeather}}}}}}}

We pull through together

I wasn’t at the hospital – I couldn’t easily get out of a work trip (team building – it kept my mind on other things which was good). Mum had Wimbledon to watch which helped her a lot during the surgery.

He should recover OK but the operation was longer and more tricky than last time due to the scar tissue from the previous op and the damage to the heart that the faulty valve had caused. We expect his recovery to be longer too.

Thanks for your good thoughts.

Axx knows Jane can..... :D

I do hope

that this is something that heals quickly and your Dad is able to get back on his feet soon.

Faulty medical replacements cause so much stress for so many people…...... surgery that is major and shouldn’t be needed has to be gone through again…... I really feel for you and your Dad here…...hugs and wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thanks

It’s really frustrating that this op was needed at all. If the valve had worked OK then it wouldn’t be needed.

It’s so tough watching him go through it all again.

Axx knows Jane can..... :D

It is tough

faulty pieces are exactly why my dad is in the current mess with his hip…... supposed to last 10 years but snapped inside his leg in 3 1/2.

We are just lucky that while long and painful it isn’t life threatening…........... I really do feel for you and sincerely hope that you don’t have to go through it again.

Your poor dad

That sounds like a terrible position to be in and very painful too. There’s a limit to the number of times a replacement can be put in isn’t there?

Axx knows Jane can..... :D

When

he had the first one done he was told that they were reluctant to do it because he was young and they only lasted 10 to 15 years, and that they only like to do 2…... that was about 9 years ago. This (when it is finally finished) will be the third one….. the first came loose and rubbing the inside of the bone, the second one had it’s manufacturing fault…... the third isn’t in yet, we have to wait a couple of months for that because of the issues they had taking the second out. Even if it lasts 10 years I anticipate he will have to have another down the track.

I'm thinking of you and your family

Fingers crossed for your Dad that he recovers quickly and that you and your Mum cope ok in the meantime.

Take extra good care of yourself. I know from personal experience with sick parents that it can be exhausting and draining.

Hugs,

Nuala

Thank you

My brother has a few more days off work so can be with mum and she also has her friends rallying around her. Last night a friend gave her an ear to listen and gin and tonic to drink. Mum needed to relax so I bet this helped her lots.

You're so welcome

I’m glad the load is being shared – it’s a hard time for you, no doubt about it. G&T for your Mum is a great idea! Hope you’re getting a bit of TLC yourself – you deserve it.

Sending

positive and healing thoughts to your dad, and comfort and care to you and the rest of the family.

I'm so sorry

you’re having to deal with your father’s AND father-in-law’s hospitalizations simultaneously! How exhausting.

My dad is having valve replacement surgery July 15! I hope he gets a good valve!

Hugs & best wishes.

It's not easy

They’re in hospitals 60 miles apart which doesn’t help us much.

The fault with these artificial valves was found last year and changes have been made I believe (well we don’t want a second faulty valve!). No problems were found with patients with animal valves in that hospital (specialist heart hospital).

I hope your father has a nice straightforward op and his recovery is boring and quick (no dramas or complications).

Thanks for your best wishes and hugs.

Hugs to you around the 15th.

Good luck to your Dad

Hope he gets on well – and no dodgy valve! I’m sure that’s a rare thing though.

Hugs,

Nuala

I'm sure RuthG's dad's valve will be fine

It is a rare thing indeed. But sods law seems to apply to our family quite a lot.

The manufacturing problems have been sorted so new valves will be better. :)

Best wishes to you.

My turn is still in the not-too-far-flung future, but by then perhaps keyhole surgery will be the gold standard.

yours?

Mine.

A hopeless mitral valve.

Sorry to hear that.

Does it bother you? Have you had surgery before?

Does it bother me...

Well, I’d rather be bothered by this than a million other ghastly unfixable things and/or disfigurements. But the gravity of it bothers me, eh; there’s no escaping its progression.
The best heart surgeon in the world (the one known colloquially and with reverence as “God”) is the one who chooses the window for future surgery.

It's getting there for you

This article was in the UK press yesterday

Sounds promising and may be the treatment you need. Let’s hope that the trials are over quickly and it’s proven to work.

Yahoo!

There were Everest trials a couple of years ago. This news certainly nudges my emotopoloooza, since three years isn’t entirely (I think) out of the question in terms of a waiting/maintenance period. (Last year, at one point, I was told “two weeks” and I can tell you I did not care for that one bit.)
