Start running and keep on running (read all 9 entries…)
Falling off again 5 months ago

I don’t know how to keep this up without a friend nearby. No one seems to want to dedicate themselves as much as I want to, but I obviously haven’t been very dedicated myself if I haven’t been keeping this up…I did run every morning for a while and it was good, but it’s now gotten far too easy to just give up and not run every day. I don’t know how I’ll get to the point where I can beat my old records on my own, if I’m not running with a team or with anyone else. This is what I was afraid of before.

If

there are running groups around where you live, it might be helpful to go run with them once in a while, or regularly. I know, it gets incredibly difficult to go run all by yourself… sometimes! :)

Here we have (at least) two running stores that organize a couple of weekly runs each (all sorts of people with all sorts of preferred running paces show up). Oh, and I have run with a local running meetupTM group too… a bunch of nice people, in my experience. Just a few options, in case you’re looking for running companions outside your current circle of lazy friends there… I judged them! :)

Goals and Partners

I had seen a goal of Matty’s that was to run every day for 43 days. I decided that if Matty could do it, I could do it. So I adopted that goal and did it. Then I adopted other running goals like running at least 20 minutes a day every day for a month. Working on those goals even without a running partner kept me motivated to keep running. Next up was the 100 days in a row goal. Once I did that one, it was a habit, and I kept doing it.

That being said, I don’t really enjoy running. I don’t live to run, or run to live. But I’ve now run 201 days in a row, and have it in my mind that I’m going to do 365 days in a row. Will I stop on day 366? I don’t know yet. But working on the smaller goals helped get me to where I am today at over 1000 miles run for the year.

Great comment Todd..

and a methodology that could be applied to other (habit-based) goals besides running.

It

Wow, that’s pretty inspiring, I hope you keep running once you’re over 365 days in a row!

The bad thing is, I sprained my ankle because I fell over while running and now I can’t run any more (for a while).

Heal Up

Make sure you are doing stretching and strengthening exercises on your ankle so that when you do start running again you won’t reinjure yourself. I’ve been running with a sore knee for almost three months now, and if I wasn’t on this quest for running 365 days in a row I would’ve stopped a long time ago to let it heal.

Today I did quarter mile interval sprints following this pattern: 7.5mph, 8.5mph, 8.0mph, 7.0mph, 9.0mph, repeat x 5. I stopped briefly after the first three miles to urinate, but then finished out the last two miles without needing to stop. I did switch up the last two quarter mile increments so that I ended with the 7.0 instead of the 9.0. I’ll run again tonight after work.

It has gotten 6 cheers on this entry.
