Lose fat, gain muscle (read all 42 entries…)
7/12/09 Workout 5 months ago

I need to find a way to motivate myself to work out more frequently. I always enjoy it when I go, it’s just getting there that is difficult. Perhaps the solution is to think of it as a standing appointment, just like all my other duties and errands.

Anyhow, today I did this workout – went through the strength part of it 2x, and used 10 lb. dumbbells for the row and bench press, mainly to ensure that I don’t screw up the shoulder again. I used the elliptical to do the sprinting thing at the end. It was nice; quick, but definitely a workout. Doing planks was kind of difficult, as my shoulders and arms were tired by the time they came around. So far my left shoulder is not particularly sore.

I am making an appointment with myself NOW to be at the gym tomorrow at 8 AM. I will a 30 min. run/walk session on the treadmill.

Fun

You know I’m having a serious think about my exercise routines at the moment. Like you, I get little annoying recurring injuries.

I seem to get stuck in the pattern of going to the gym 3 times a week, enjoying myself for a month or two, then getting stale and pushing a little harder to get some adrenaline going, and bang, there goes another muscle/tendon.

My new experiment is using a sport – with a sport there’s a series of skills to learn and a social aspect, so I don’t get bored. And if I’m not bored I don’t do anything silly (like going from 20 to 40kg on the shoulder press to try fewer reps at a heavier weight!!! I never learn!).

Anyway, I hope you find a balance soon. I totally know how frustrating it is.

Hey, I forgot to respond to this.

But it was a really great comment.

I would really like to find a sport – lots of them sound like fun – but I’m a little sport-phobic. I just never played team sports much growing up – aside from a bit of backyard baseball, it was all gym class where I was playing with actual athletes who had actual skills (and who got annoyed b/c I didn’t have any). So…I’ve been trying to figure out where I can find a team of all-beginners in something or other. That or a team of mega-mixed abilities where the other folks will be patient with me while I build my skills. I’m not totally uncoordinated so I think I could be OK if given the chance to practice.

It’s tough b/c a lot of the folks who play team sports recreationally seem to be drawn to them because they’ve played before and have the rudiments down already.

Tennis is good for that

Here in the UK you get club evenings where you just turn up and it’s a total mix of standards. At local clubs you can usually get group coaching for £8 an hour ($12?) and after 5 or 6 of those you can get the ball over the net pretty well… and off you go :-)

But that’s my sport so I’m biased!

funniculee has gotten 3 cheers on this entry.
