stop using soap (read all 3 entries…)
does it really work?

About a year ago, inspired by a book I read, I stopped using shampoo. The theory goes, shampoo is a form of soap that works by binding to non-water-soluble oil molecules and washing them away. That’s great if your hair feels greasy all the time, but what if it doesn’t? Your hair needs a certain amount of oil to be shiny and manageable and not frizzy… some people produce too much, so they need shampoo. But if your hair tends dry or frizy, you shouldn’t be removing the oil, which isn’t inherently dirty.

And truth be told, my hair is much shinier and more manageable now, with nice solid curls instead of nappy friz.

So, can the same theory be applied to body soap? Once again, your body produces natural oils which aren’t inherently dirty. Am I needlessly drying out my skin by using soap? Should I be using soap if I don’t feel greasy or oily? I’m thinking of switching over to some kind of “gentle cleansing bar”, to see if it makes my skin soft and smooth. It’s worth a shot.

sagittarian Looking forward to good things

it really does work! and feels great. plus, you learn to appreciate the fragrances of natural things.

the idea is to avoid detergents, as opposed to soap. natural soap is okay (as in, saponified vegetable oils, etc.). avoid anything with “Sodium Lauryl Sulfate” or “Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate” (Sodium Laureth might be okay).

good luck, and have fun!

Hey, thanks for the tip! I will totally try that.

What have you found to replace soap? My skin is super-dry, and I’ve heard that using soap every day is counter-productive…

Nothing yet, I’m afraid! At one point, I had a marvelous oatmeal scrub which left me feeling clean, exfoliated, and soft without being greasy. But I haven’t been able to find the exact same thing again, so for now I’m still using soap. :(

From what I know (which I am not claiming to know a lot)

but the purpose of shampooing is not really washing the hair, but to massage/wash the scalp. Even if you’re not the type to produce lots of oil, the pores can still get clogged with dirt, oils, etc. Clogged pores leads to unhealthy hair…

True...

but there are other ways to cleanse the scalp that don’t cause so much damage to the hair. In any case, I’ve been using this method for two years now and it has worked great for me—softer, shinier hair, no dandruff… So I guess the proof is in the pudding.

You shampoo your hair with pudding...?

Hey! I ought to try that!

Tapioca works best. The little beads are awesome for exfoliating.

No Soap & No Shampoo

Hi. I was reading and wanted to reply. I am currently doing the no soap and no shampoo cleaning. I read about no soap from another site, and have felt so much better since just washing with only water. My skin is getting so much softer and healthier. This website actually said how bad soap really is for our bodies. And, the thing that surprised me was that it even said that if we stop using soap, we wont be stinky anymore ( under arms , etc ) the reason is, our bodies have their own oils and good bacterias to fight off the bad bacterias, when we wash under our arms with soap we kill not only the bacteria that causes the bad odors, but the good bacteria that is there to keep the bad bacteria away. If we’d stop killing them all and just use water, the good bacteria on our bodies would take over and not allow the bad bacteria to build up preventing body odors. As for the no shampoo method of washing our hair I am trying it now and so far I have had some amazingly excellent results in just a few short days. I have very long hair and it’s wavy, and it’s very dry from coloring and my scalp can get very oily after only a couple of days, but since doing the no shampoo method, my hair is so amazingly soft and the dryness is going away. My scalp is not oily because I be sure to use a light conditioner and take care to work it in well, this helps to pull the natural oils from my scalp down the hair shaft without stripping my hair like shampoo did. My hair is getting curlier it seems because it’s less dry and so much easier to comb, there are no where near as many tangles as there used to be. P.S. I do not use anything in place of soap.. just lightly exfoliate with a natural sponge or a soft cotton cloth, and for my hair light conditioners and refrain from adding tons of heavy products during styling… and I don’t blowdry if I can help it.

And to think we all thought how gross it would have been to live hundreds of years ago with no soap or shampoos.

Here’s a photo of how long my hair is…

=)

Thanks for your reply! It’s definitely food for thought—maybe I will give the no-cleansers-at-all approach a try…

By the way, I too use a mild conditioner to clean my scalp and detangle my hair. It works great! I’ve been so much happier with my hair since I abandoned shampoo.

=)

Good luck with this!
