visit the Amish
I had a lovely time...

They gave me my very own sunbonnet. They also make this delicious dish called knieffel. Basically, it is little oval shaped flat pieces of dough (about the size of a nickle) steamed for about 10 minutes, then add a little butter, brown slightly. Usually served with tender roast beef and gravy. Yeah, I know, my arteries clog just thinking of it! Amish folks also make really delicious homemade noodles. I learned how to make bread from an Amish. They believe in wholesome filling meals. They also work their arse off gardening and with daily chores. I’ve quilted with the Amish. They are a very lovely group of people if you do not gawk, stare or make a huge fuss over how they are different. They treasure their privacy and are not pleased when disrespectful tourist shove a camera in their face.

questions

Hello, we would also like to visit the Amish people, and if possible, stay working with them for some time. But, we doubt if this is possible at all. Do they allow strangers in their midst ? Can you visit their sunday services without problems ? .... How do you even start planning a trip like that (from Belgium) !
thanks

I’ve been to Amish church services. I would suggest looking at some of the smaller communities and not Lancaster County, PA. There are some nice smaller communities in Ohio and in southern Ontario. If you do a bit of searching in the internet, you can find a family that runs a B&B. Perhaps then you can begin a dialect of communication over the internet with a family and discuss options for your visit and how much they would be willing to let you contribute without getting underfoot. Winter is a good time, because in the Spring, Summer and Fall they are involved with their gardens and farms and usually don’t appreciate outside help (usually because outside help mucks things up and then they have to waste time fixing it) If you have any farm experience, that might help aid your request. I have a lot of farming experience, so perhaps that is what made a difference for me. If you smell like a tourist, they most likely will not be interested. Like me, I just don’t have time for tourist when I am busy trying to work my farm.

Great instructions!

Wow, what a great post! Anyone with an interest in visiting the Amish will undoubtedly find it helpful.
